I do hope people aren't getting tired of my questions /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Here is another little problem. Somehow the choke cable has been yanked so hard it has come out of the dash.

I can't budge it by pushing or pulling. I can't find space to reach behind the dash to feel for what I expect is a lock nut behind. What are my options? Do I need to remove the whole dash to loosen the lock and reposition the cable?
 
Wooo, That does not look right. I would first look at the point where the outer cable was secured under the bonnet and see if it just came loose. Next I would check the inner wire/cable to see if it also just came loose or broke off at the end. I think then you can make a decision to repair or Replace.---Fwiw---Keoke
 
I'm on my third replacement cable this year. The current crop are complete garbage. You may want to take the old cable to a rigging supply. There is one not far from you in Burbank called VER Sales on Naomi St. If you can crimp in a new higher quality cable and housing you would be better off than buying a new complete unit from the usual suppliers. Or course this is providing the main unit is not physically broken.
 
Julian, You can access the back of the cable housing by removing the speedometer. Make sure you disconnect the battery cable first to prevent a short in the instrument wiring by bumping with a metal tool. Looks like the cable froze in the outer housing or there was not of free movement in the connection to the carb shaft. PJ
 
Do what PJ says!!: Disconnect the battery afore ya start diggin' about "back there." A 3/4" "crow's foot" wrench will help if you have to remove the whole assembly... It !appears! your cable has either come loose at the choke attachment point onna carb or S T R E T C H E D inside the sheath. Steve_S has given you *straight info* about the replacement cables available... go with a "boat house" or a rigging outfit. They'll give you return on yer money. The other stuff is well-and-truly JUNK!!

I have just set up a "period" choke pull and cable in this '64 and was about to prep a TechArticle on it... Photos will be included. I figgered Basil would have the attachment area back up over the weekend.... He's once again outdone himself.

Kinda ironic, actually.
 
Like Doc and others said about the new choke cables being junk is very true. For some reason they just don't work as well and last as long as the original ones. What I did to help the new one I installed in my car to work easier was to pull out the cable from the housing and coat it with lithium grease and then reinsert it back into the housing. It does seem to work a little easier. PJ

PS, I forgot to add, No! we are not getting tired of your questions! That's what this forum is all about. Others helping others. Back in the old days,(no comments please), I used to tell my aviation students; A question, is showing a thurst for knowledge on a subject you don't quite understand and the dumbest question you could ever ask, is the one you dont! PJ
 
OK! I'll try to get at it by pulling the speedometer, as PJ suggests. So how do I pull the speedometer?! ... just joking ... it reminds me of "There's a hole in my bucket" :smile:
 
GPU monitor "took a powder" !!!

Just lugged another 17" CRT into th' garage as replacement...
