TR2/3/3A Chinese lanterns tr3

Does anybody know how the little Chinese lanterns are held in place on a stator tube in a tr3? I am making a stator tube out of steel tubing, and I cannot figure out what tool they used to make that little crimp in the line that holds the lanterns in place with out damaging the line. In short I need a way to hold the lanterns in place or some kind of suitable replacement.

My recollection is that they fit snugly enough that they did not move along the tube. I suppose a bit of JBWeld could be used to secure them? Or for that matter a bit of welding might also work.
