I remember squeaking out the last good days of driving.
Posted the fact way back when. Saw a fellow in a,
forgive me fellas, I think TR3, Green, low slung doors
there, like knuckles scrape if you hang your arm out...
anyway, I had just painted my car. He was right behind
me shooting numerous pictures on his cell phone.
We passed by one another and I saw he was surrounded
by his leather interior cover...can't use mine cause
I put the darned roll bar on for safety...yeah, right...

It was cold as the dickens. If I could driver her now,
I would.
 
Took the TR6 out a few days ago - no top.
It started raining,so I wimped out & put it
back in the garage.I also noticed the brake
pedal getting weak.

Wise to park her and see what's up. I pull the plug
at rain as well. I mean, there has got to be a point.
 
Hello, Nick, I thought of you yesterday in the chilly old country, while I did a few things for my TR3, here in sunny California:

I thought I had been smelling gas in the oil, and the fuel pump was dirty on the outside, so I took the pump apart, and replaced the good-looking TRF diaphragm w/ another. I also replaced the oil seal under the metal holder; here's what I replaced:

Was this the cause of the gas getting into the oil, or did it rip afterward while removing the diaphragm-shaft? I wish there were a better way of assembling this without being so hard on the seal. I also changed the oil and replaced the filter. Once again, I was reminded of the thankless job w/ the original canister set-up.

Anyway, hope you're feeling better, your TR3 will be waiting.....

Your picture warmed me up. The idea of being able to work in comfort on the car sounds great. At this time of year I usually end up with numb fingers and then wonder where the blood is coming from! Your garage with TR3 and TR6 looks great.
I would have thought that the seal you have replaced should only be there to stop oil going up and not to stop fuel going down. I would have thought that the pump diaphragm should not allow any fuel past at all. I don't suppose you are doing a lot of short journeys with the choke out. Then, you probably don't need the choke in CA!

That's right, the lower seal normally does not keep gas from the sump, that's the diaphragm's job.

However, it should keep gas out of the crankcase after the diaphragm has failed (forcing it to run out the hole on the side instead), so possibly they both are bad.

Another possible source of fuel in the oil is a leaking carb float valve. A small leak may not be noticeable with the engine running, but since the tank fuel level can be above the level of the carbs, it's possible for it to find it's way into a cylinder and past the rings, over time.

Thanks, Randall, I'll investigate the float valve..... I had to replace one on the TR6, so at least I'm a little familiar w/ it. BTW, the TRF diaphragm looked good after 3 years; perhaps further pointing to the carb valve.

my baby has been put to bed for the Christmas break. In fact it is too hot to go for a drive these last 2 weeks. Temps ranging from 39C to 44C. The fuel pump wouldn't cope, neither would the radiator if I got stuck in traffic. I wouldn't mind some of your cold weather right now! It's 10.30 at night and a cool 31C.......
I'll be doing a few maintenance jobs to it this week ready for daily driving to work next week (flush radiator/new coolant, flush break fluid, etc).

P.S. My uncle swears by the cold cure of warm whiskey liquor with a teaspoon of honey before bed. He seemed to always have a cold!

If we averaged out our temperatures that would give us both around 18 to 20 degrees. That would suit me fine!
