Cheap seat covers...?

Anyone have any experience with off-the-shelf seat covers from your local auto parts store? My TR6 seats are kinda beat-up, especially the driver's side, and I'm not quite ready to shell out for new stock seat covers and cushions (someday, but not yet). Has anyone found a cheap interim alternative that still looks good (ie looks "fairly" stock) without looking too pimped? I've seen some that have an all black leather/vinyl appearance. Any feedback appreciated, esp. with pictures!

 Sweet! Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' about! My body color is Damson, so that should make my car look like the Joker Mobile!

What's you're price range? I'd been looking for used seat covers as an interim step but ended up chatting with a guy who works with leather - he did both seats in leather and rebuilt the padding for about the same as buying a new set of vinyl covers (not even including a padding set).

Well, my current price range is in the cheapo range ie $20-30 covers from the auto parts store, but I am also interested in the full rebuild option for when that time comes. I took some seats out of my old scirocco years ago(man, I miss that car!) and took them down to Arizona for a full re-upholster and it was much cheaper than local sources and I was really happy with the result. I guess in those sunny hot locales, seats and dashes fade and crack fast so there's a big market for repairs down there.

Ah - gotchya...it very much cost more than $20-30! In researching seat upholstery and such, I could swear I came across some slip-over covers with some padded stock-looking middle section. I'll let you know if I can figure out where I saw them. Interested to hear if others have any solutions!

I am going this route temporarily as well. The guy at Advance Auto Parts said to bring the car down and he would let me "try a few on". I haven't made the time for it yet but that is the blan. I hope to find solid black or black and grey although they had a nice red and white Magnum PI style Hawaiin print!

Cheap Seat Covers - sounds like it should be a song from ZZTop :jester:

I got lucky at Auto Zone. I have a Tahiti blue with black interior and found some blue and black ones that fit pretty good for $19 each. I have to say they go well with the car. As usual they are rather loose fitting so a little work with the sewing machine is in order.

Skikir, you'll have to take some before and after pictures to show the loose fit and what you are able to accomplish with the sewing machine.
