Chattering g'box

Having rebuilt the engine on my TR6 and got 250 miles on it I started to put some decent weight on the gas pedal and the engine is running very strongly.
However, for the 1st time I've noticed that in 2nd and 3rd under heavy acceleration theres a chattering sound coming from the gearshifter which you can feel if you hold onto it.
This is a new phenomenon, it shifts smoothly and I haven't been underneath to investigate yet. Is it likely to be short of oil or is there something more sinister? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
I haven't looked at the box since I got the car a year ago, I think it needs a 90 weight GL4 gear oil right?

Hi Graham,

Was everything balanced? Flywheel, drive shaft, etc. Often any driveline vibrations show up most tocibly in the shift lever.

Was the flywheel carefully secured?

Does the vibration happen at the same rpm all the time, no matter what gear the car is in? Or, is it more speed related? Or does it just show up under harder acceleration, but at various speeds and rpms?

Also, the shift lever should have an "anti-rattle" plunger and spring. These are often omitted during rebuilds and without them the shift handle itself will often make some annoying, but usually harmless rattling noises.

Hope it's something simple!

Hey Graham,
There is a gear shift spring & plunger that is suposed to surpress this rattleing from the shifter. This is installed on the tip of the shifter where it alingns in the trany top. If this was overlooked or droped out under installation a chattering sound will come from the shifter under load. If you have a Bentley check out page 277.
This is often over looked or misplaced in a rebuild.

Reprise on an old post....
I drained my g'box oil and the magnetic plug was furry with metal bits.
I put in a synthetic oil which helped a bit but under heavy acceleration she still chatters and vibrates through the shift lever in 2nd & 3rd.
Looks like I've got a g'box rebuild ahead of me.
Anybody used that rebuild kit from TRF?
Is it good quality?

I just purchased TRF's gearbox rebuild kit. All appears to be good quality but I haven't fitted it yet. Realize that early gearbox's (pre 74?) have a brass top-hat bush for second gear which is prone to breakage. Moss sells a steel replacement for this weak design. TRF does not include thrust washers with their kit stating that current replacements are not worth selling.

Altaknight; I would drain my gearbox and look closely at what you find in the oil. Significant metal particles would indicate damaged bush, synchros, gear teeth etc.

I have the same sound/vibration in my TR3(most apparent in second gear under load). I was told by a Brit car mechanic it was not a major deal but I also presume it's not something that one can fix/replace without pulling the transmission?
