no chassis tag. Any other way to get it?

JD

You could order a BMIHT certificate for your car. I also recall that when I restored my TR4A I found a number in the driver's side rear inner wheel well which looked similar to a chassis number. I don't know if it's supposed to match the chassis number on the tag though. I'd have to check on my second one as I replaced the frame and inner tub on my original TR4A so they would not match at this point.

Thanks. took a quick look and didn't see anything but spider sacks from the barn. i'll make a note on my list to check better when I get her up on stands and the wheels off.

Do you know if alot of owners do the BMHIT thing?

JD

Just so we're all on the same page: is it the Commission number plate that you're missing...the one that would show "CTC58489L" along with the paint and trim code numbers?

It would look something like this one:

I have the commission tag, though it's in pretty rough shape. I thought there was supposed to be a chassis tag on the opposite side, which is pretty covered with surface rust, though there seems to be a rivet left over.

JD

JD,

Yes there should be a chassis tag on the passenger side.

The number in the wheel well appeared to be stamped on a small welded-on plate and was under the undercoating so it might be hard to find.

Oh and regarding the BMHIT certificate, I don't know if a lot of owners do it but I did it for my cars.

I've been looking at that. Did you use the commission number where it said Car/Chassis number?

JD

JD,

Yes, I did mine using the commmission number and here's the information fields that are provided on it.

1. Make & Model
2. Car/Chassis Number
3. Engine Number
4. Body Number
5. Specification
6. Colour: a) exterior, b) trim, c) hood (top)
7. Date of Build
8. Date of Despatch
9. Destination (Dealer)
10. Other Numbers (where recorded)
11. Details of Factory Fitted Equipment
12. Other Information
13. Issued to
14. Date of Issue
15. Signature of Archivist

Note that they do not always have all the information on every car. One of my TR4A's had much more information including key numbers, hood color, date it shipped, destination and what ship it was shipped on while the other did not have that information available.

So on the one with minimal information, I was able to confirm the chassis and engine were original, the day it was built and that it originally came with radial tires on wire wheels (which were gone when I bought it). So it's up to you whether that's worth the cost if that's all you get.

Thanks Scott, without the chassis tag, I think it will help to have the certificate for documentation.

If this is the tag you mean (photo is a TR4, not 4A) then (once you have the number) I think you could make one fairly easily as it is just stamped numbers on an unpainted aluminum blank.

Let me know if a detailed photo would be helpful.
