The restoration guide gives black as the colour for the suspension components

Gloss, flat, or something in between

Eastwood Extreme Chassis Black in a spraycan is pretty hard to beat. I used gloss which tends to dull to satin with age. They do a satin as well which I used on the heater box.

It wrinkles up if you spray on too many coats, I noticed that on the brake backing plates where it was hard to get even coverage without over-painting some areas. Minor issue really.

Done in one coat of POR 15 gloss now but is it not UV stable and a second coat of UV stable paint is recommended.

Are you saying that satin is correct?

I'd say there is no 'correct' gloss level, more dependent on what large drum of low cost black liquid the factory could get their hands on at the time. Anywhere between satin and gloss will look much the same after a few months use given that there aren't any large flat areas on the suspension components.

What ruins the originality theme for me is seeing how many people paint each part separately and then assemble them with nice shiny re-plated fasteners. It is far more likely that the factory assembled the bigger components (EG the back axle) then hosed them all over with black in a somewhat uncaring fashion.

There will no doubt be some variation in original paint type because some OTS parts would probably have arrived at the factory already painted such as the dampers. The rear dampers on my car were assembled unpainted then the arms were painted black which left overspray on the aluminum housings. The housings were definitely not painted intentionally and that is how I will redo them.

Andy.

I use Martin Senior Tuff Coat in semi gloss for chassis. Is it correct? Good question, but it looks great! I just try to stay away from high gloss for chassis. No paint today will match perfectly, the paint they used 40/50/60 years ago.PJ

I have used Eastwood Extreme Chassis Black both in an HVLP gun and a spray can. Also used Rustoleum High Performance Gloss, end result it all looks about the same. I used a lot of the original bolts and screws so the spray can works well to touch up after assembly.
