Chart for wire gauges

I touched on this question in another posting, but it deserves a posting all of its own.

Wiring charts for the TR3 are easy to find, and they're clearly color-coded. But what is missing from all these charts is any mention of the proper gauges of the wires.

Is anyone familiar with a chart or other source of information that lists the proper gauges of the wires for the various components of the car? Surely the gauge of the wires going to the horns, for example, must be larger than, say, than the wires going to the tail lights. But how does one know for certain?

Someone has said that most of the wiring in the TR3 was either 14 or 16 gauge wire, but not all.

Dave,

Thank you very much. I have this page from British Wiring, and although it is helpful in a general way, it doesn't tell you what the gauge of a specific wire in the wiring diagram of at TR3 should be.

For example, I am planning to replace some wires to my brakelight switch (with some wire generously supplied by Geo. Hahn), but do I use 14 gauge wire, 16 gauge wire, or 18 gauge wire? Or some other gauge? Or does it even matter with this component?

It just seems to me that if the charts are going to be so specific on the color combinations of the wires (for tracing purposes), they should also indicate the gauge of the wire to use.

Ed - one simple way to resolve this is just to call British wiring and ask. You are going to order anyway so why not go old school and communicate with your voice? Then report back

tdskip,

You are right... and that was going to be my next step.

But before I do, I think I have found my "chart" and I want to share it with all who are interested in this topic. It is located in an unusual location: a webpage for off-road vehicles.

Go to: https://www.offroaders.com/tech/12-volt-gauge-amps.htm
and, under Technical Facts and Info., click "Automotive Wiring Tips and Techniques."

Then click on "12 volt Wire Gauge vs. Amps"

The chart there is very helpful.

That chart ,different version ,was noted earlier wasn't it?

Don, No, the chart noted earlier was something from British Wiring, and it was pretty much "generic." This one is much more specific on gauge "requirements."

tdskip -- To look at the size of these cars, one might mistake them for ATVs.

There is a nice little "wire size calculator" at the following site:

goto https://gtsparkplugs.com

Click on "Calculators" at tab at top

Click on "Wire Size Calculator for Current Capacity"
