Just don't do what I did ones: I went away on a 6-month trip & inadvertently left my Norton's trickle charger on - battery was dry as a desert when I returned (& as useless also!)

The chargers I use are completely automatic and will not charge unless the voltage drops off. They have indicator lights and most times when I look at them they are not charging. However, I still do not leave them plugged in for more than a few days per month. I don't think these will overcharge. It looks just like the Moss #386-245, but you can get them for less $.

I love the sterlite bucket idea! I just bought a "special" bucket from Northwest Import Parts and, although cheaper than M, it was still (way) more than $2. Oh well, when I do the other car.
Note on converting to 1 battery: MAKE SURE THE NON-EARTH TERMINAL AND CLAMP CANNOT MOVE INTO A POSITION WHERE THEY CAN SHORT TO THE BODY METAL! A little piece of rubber or plastic glued in the right place could save you from an unexpected welding job or fire.
