I have the chance to buy a 1960 tr3a.History:this was my fathers car in 1965.he sold it to his friend who has had it ever since.I believe everything is original. Its been garaged and has no little or no rust or dents.i think its the original paint. It hasn't been run since 1980.the motor turns over with crank in front of car.the interior needs work(seats, trim, door panels).Hes selling it to me for $3000.Im wondering what these cars go for in this condition.P.S the car has a lot of sentimental value but i dont want to get burned.

Re: chance to buy dads TR3A!

Welcome to the list. :savewave:
I've had mine for about 25 years, so I'll let someone else take guess about value. I know they will want pictures.

You might be able to get an idea about value from ebay.

Here are some questions you might want to ask yourself.
Would you buy a TR3a if it wasn't you dad's?
If you were looking for a TR3a would you want this one?
Why was it parked/stored?
Was it stored inside or outside?

I see you got several answers while I was typing.

Re: chance to buy dads TR3A!

:iagree:

I paid more for my TR3, in worse condition and several years ago. And I still think I got a good deal.

Re: chance to buy dads TR3A!

Hi JR,

I`d go for it. I pd. much more than that for a Rust Bucket!

Re: chance to buy dads TR3A!

Definitely! I paid $1000 for mine in 1991 and it will need at least floors, rockers, trunk and spare tire compartment. That might have been too much at the time but it too had some sentimental value since it was the first Triumph I ever rode in and the one that got me interested in owning one.

Re: chance to buy dads TR3A!

Whether you're into cars or not buy it yesterday. I have three TR-3s, one of which was my father's. There isn't another TR-3 (probably) out there that was your father's. The car will mean more to you as time goes by. If you have kids, one of them could one day say it was his Dad's and his Grandfather's.
Plus 3 grand for a complete car is a value but buy it even at twice the price.

Re: chance to buy dads TR3A!

I have nearly the same situation all though my dad kept it from '62 until this last July. He's gotten to old to dive or care for it. Mine is in similar condition and I'm now getting the interior in condition. I did all of the get her going work myself, I haven't had a more rewarding experience in my life than getting her started and now driving it. What a blast and the notalgia is killer. It's been through the help of the guys knowledge on this forum that has made it possible and I look forward to continued support.

Re: chance to buy dads TR3A!

I think the guy is trying to rip you off! If I were you, I would never speak to him again. In fact, give me his number and I will call him and give him a piece of my mind, for you of course.

Re: chance to buy dads TR3A!

Congrats on your good fortune! Those kind of garaged finds are getting pretty rare.

Re: chance to buy dads TR3A!

All that said, you're a ways off from drivability. Try and find out why it was parked in 1980 - the engine or transmission probably needs a rebuild. The hydraulics & brakes will need a complete overhaul as well the fuel system & carbs. Tires are shot. And that's the short list. It will be mostly fun and worth it, though. This is the place for questions if you haven't done this sort of thing before.
