"Champing at the Bit" and other phrases

How many of us knew that it is really not "Chomping" at the bit?

And, any other good phrases out there they are commonly misused?

And, we won't even talk about proper comma usage....

Re: "Champing at the Bit" and other phrases

I suspect people will continue to misuse those phrases irregardless of the correct usage

Re: "Champing at the Bit" and other phrases

It can be easy to use words incorrectly, I'm glad I'm not orientated that way!

Last week I discovered one I had been using incorrectly - equilibrate. I had always used equilibriate - probably because of equilibrium. But there are only two "i"s in equilibrate, not three.

Re: "Champing at the Bit" and other phrases

The term that rattles me is "hot water heater" .... there is no such thing. You don't heat hot water, it is just a "water heater".

A favorite of mine (quoted here from its more or less original form): <span style="font-style: italic">Musick has Charms to sooth a savage ___________....</span>

The blank is?

Actually you could use a hot water heater to make very hot water. :jester:

Re: "Champing at the Bit" and other phrases

Actually my water heater is a Hot Water Heater. Once it builds to temp it is always heating hot water.

Well, I'm out. It aint proper unless you correctly mispronounce words here. For some reason, folks from MS can't pronounce French words. I know I have a comma problem, and double consonant one too. I do know, however; proper comma and semicolon placement after however.

Elliot, how 'bout water temperature differential inducer?

Re: "Champing at the Bit" and other phrases

Right, that's an ice cube maker.

Re: "Champing at the Bit" and other phrases

My wife and I were just talking about the phrases "pre-prepared food" and anything of the "pre-cut" ilk (e.g., "pre-cut carrots"). If you think about it, pre-prepared food is simply food that hasn't been prepared yet. Anything that's "pre-cut" means that it has yet to be cut, rather than something that's been cut already.

These things bother me -- dare I say it -- <span style="font-style: italic">alot</span>. But I'm sure I'll be <span style="font-style: italic">alright</span>.

Re: "Champing at the Bit" and other phrases

That's like at the airport when they announce for <span style="font-style: italic">"pre-boarding"</span>... can you actually get on board BEFORE you get on board?
