Center-Shift Bellhousing

Hi,

Are all of the BJ7 and BJ8 center-shift bellhousings interchangeable (the same casting/part)?

I need a new bellhousing for a second BJ8 center-shift gearbox and wanted to make sure that all of the center-shift gearbox cars used the same bellhousing. I have searched, but can not find any information on differences between center-shift bellhousings in the various cars/years that used them.

However, the Moss catalog (and other catalogs) lists BJ7 and BJ8 center-shift bellhousing separately (although both are listed as NA). Not sure why they would do this if it is the same part?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Regards, Bill

Hi again,

Looking through eBay, it seems like the BT7 and BJ8 center-shift bell-housings are the same. However, it would be great if someone knowledgeable could confirm which bell-housings work with the BJ8.

"Center-Shift Bell-housing: This is an Austin Healey 3000 transmission bell-housing BT7 and BJ8 bell-housing: part number AEC3621 SG6855."

Thanks for any help.

Regards, Bill

In browsing on another thread topic, I noticed that DWM--Denis Welch Motoring--offers one bellhousing that 'suits all centrechange[sic] gearboxes.'

Hi Bob,

Thank you for sending information on the Denis Welch bell-housing.

I saw this several months ago and called them immediately; as it was a new casting supposedly using better alloys and machining than the original part. And, the price was reasonable.

Unfortunately, it turned out to be vapor ware. They apparently had some made several years ago and then stopped production. Simon had no idea if they will ever make them again and he was surprised it was still listed in their catalog? I'm always a day late and a dollar short. :(

Their listing "suits all centrechange gearboxes" was why I thought (was hoping) all of the later center-shift bell-housing might be interchangeable.

Regards, Bill

My catalog is a 2016; sorry for misleading and getting your hopes up, but it does, IMO, answer your original question:

'Are all of the BJ7 and BJ8 center-shift bellhousings interchangeable (the same casting/part)?'

Hi Bob,

Thank you for trying to help me; and you are the only person who tried!

Just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate your help. And, you absolutely did not give me misleading information. It just turned out to be a catalog error because the part is no longer available.

Very sorry if I gave you the impression you had raised my hopes or posted misleading information. I contacted Denis Welch two months ago to inquire about the bell-housing after seeing it in their catalog; and was told the NA status of the part at that time. I guess there was not much demand for it?

I wanted to explain that the bell-housing was not available in case someone else needed one and read this thread.

Regards, Bill

According to Leo Ruof who rebuilds Healey gearboxes and overdrives, they're interchangeable.

Hi Bob,

Thank you for the confirmation about the center-shift bell-housings being interchangeable.

Small world. According to the title information we have, the previous owner of our car bought it from Leo Ruof in Ohio.

Regards, Bill
