Cause of rear wheel lockup at 55MPH [don't try this at home kids]

Well. Now I know the source of my excitement. As you recall my OD blewup just outside of Santa Cruz. Scared the bejesus outta me. At 55 I switched on the overdrive and clunk / chirp (momentary rear wheel lockup) ... no more overdrive. It drove fine without OD the rest of the way home which was just about right for me to calm down after the chirp. I now have some pics of the failure mechanism. I am still trying to determine the cause.
((IF YOU HAVE A 28% GEAR FOR SALE PLEASE CONTACT ME))
The first pic shows the two broken teeth off the 28% reduction planetary gear (right). On the left is a good 22% unit.

In the next photo you can see the teeth lodged in the annulus. Ouch !!

Yoweeee!....that's worse than the piston I took out of my engine last month.
Brings to mind the chain that came off my Honda 305 Scrambler so many years ago (and wrapped around the wheel...I survived unscathed by pure luck)).
Glad you were able to keep it under control.

BIGHLY-Thats a 28% OVD on ebay but the rust showing puts me off. I would give David Knock a call at British Car Specialties and see if he doesnt have the part,also you might contact Bruce Phillips at Healey Surgeons.FWIW---GNB

Found the part from Dave in Stockton. After recieving it turns out that the annulus has bent teeth also. Have another now and will back on the road in time for the run to Dixon on the 16th. The transmission on ebay would be a good buy for someone as long as the laygear etc is OK. Problem is that the fella only wants local pick-up and won't ship. Anyone in NY willing to pick this up and ship it to me?

"Teeth lodged in the annulus" is something I don't even want to contemplate!

Ain't owning British cars fun?

Ya. My wife looked at all my parts bills last night and now I have another set of teeth lodged in my other annulus.

I cooked her dinner and plied her with Corona beers and lime.

Did I mentioned she gets new china.

I hope to have all the teeth out of my annulus' by mid week next.

I just want to drive ....

There are shippers that will "door to door" for reasonable rates. I routinley use R&L Carriers to ship 100s of pounds of repaired circuit boards around the country. They pull up to my garage and pick the pallet up with a pallet jack and lift it on to the truck using a lift gate. Their PH# is 800-543-5589. I'm certain it's more expensive than going to the freight terminal and droping off the stuff, but I'm not equipped to do that. I paid about $140.00 for 200 lbs of circuit boards whit a fairly high insurance rate (WPB to Chicago). PS they can provide a pallet too.

OK so it is now all rebuilt (Thanks Bill B) with a used annulus and planetary gear (Thanks Norm N).
Tonight I'll begin the reassembly process and be ready for an early morning drive Sunday from the South Bay to Dixon.

Damage assessment
Annulus - $90
Planetary Gears - $150
Accumulator parts - $100
Labor - $120
Shipping parts all over - $150
Guinness - $30
=================
Total = $640

Hope the sale on Guinness at Costco goes through this upcoming weekend.

Tracy,
Did you put in the uprated accumulator parts. They are actually Triumph parts.

If so, I'm interested in how you like the modification.

I'll let you know.. wrenching clockwise again

Sorry Bighly - just noticed your request.
Thats way up north. I have no connections up there - sorry

All right. After much ado I made it up to the Dixon Swap Meet and Show. Bill overnighted the broken overdrive housing parts (dropped in shipping, another story) and I reinstalled the tranny Friday night. The OD worked flawlessly and seems to kick in quicer and smoother with the new accumulator. Much to my suprise I took 3rd place amoungst some very well prepared Healeys. There were about 10 3000s ranging from 57-67 and we were all globbed together in one big class 100/6s-3000BJs. Guess the last minute wrenching was worthwhile.

Congratulations,
You certainly deserve it with all the hard labor & parts money you have invested. You have more patience & persistance than I would ever have.
