castellated nuts

Looking through the archives for info on fasteners I found Karls59Tr original post about bent trunnion fulcrums. The topic turned to fasteners, specifically castellated nuts. I'm rebuilding a GT6 and want the safest and have been thinking that nylocs are the best, especially for any non-life saving component. The idea of castellated nuts is much better, but don't you need a bolt/screw with a hole drilled in it? Not a major deal I suppose, but no one has mentioned that aspect of the equation and I would like to know if I'm missing something ( first time THAT ever happened!)

You are correct. You need the hole through for the cotter pin or safety wire.
All steel grade 8 locknuts hold better than the nyloc nuts. Over time, vibration can loosen nyloc, where the all steel actually alter the bolt threads somewhat, making a strong lock.
