What's the consensus. Do you carpet complete under the seats, partially under the seats or not at all?

Why the question you ask. Just bought a yard of red material from Stock Interiors. Thought that was going to be enough but I'm a bit shy. Trying to figure a way to make one yard work and still look good without have to order second yard and have lots of surplus. Sorta like loafs and fishes.
 
Carpet runs under the seat here.
 
Bit the bullet and ordered a second yard this evening. $34.00 plus shipping. Very nice carpet by the way. Their red # 815 is a good match to cherry red trim.
 
Do you put slits in the carpet so that it can be removed without pulling the seat?

I glued down the carpet and bolted in the seats - those would have to be big slits!
 
Then how do you take the carpets out to dry them?
 
Just yank the seats...it only takes a few minutes to pop 'em out, ya know.
 
It takes more than a few minutes to remove the seats, then you have to remove them again to put the carpet back in. Last summer I probably pulled the carpets out five time to have them dry. Whose idea was it to put carpet in an open top car anyway?

'Tis the season, NO PROBLEM !!!! Cut the carpet in 12 strips and start handin' it out. Better have a few baskets around.


No carpet under seats here. I did a roll-your-own too. Everyone who sees it loves it. I gotta bunch of surplus, but that's good as I can replace areas that wear with the same exact material.....PLUS, I can make floor mats out of it as well.

Cut the carpet under the seats to shape, take carpet to a shop and have it bound on the edges. then loose lay under seats
 
I'm debating on whether or not to put carpet under the seats. Other than sound deadening, I'm not sure of the purpose.

I don't (the car wash would take the paint off my car). However, I like to drive my car, and rain does not usually deter me. Unfortunately, the '58 Sprite is not as water tight as my '70 Midget, and it takes much more effort to put the top on the Sprite.

Are Bugeye seats attached differently than later Midgets? With mine, it's just two nuts in the front from underneath, two bolts in the back from the top, and out they come. Less than five minutes per side on mine. The hardest part (for me) is aligning the holes in the carpet again, but it's still prob just 15-20 minutes to put 'em both back in. (I've actually considered using wingnuts underneath.)
 
Basically the same, but still incredibly inconvenient(for me). I want to be able to pull into the garage and have the carpets hung up within 5 minutes.
 
Oh yes Trevor, the thrill of driving top down in a rainstorm. Changing over to Miata seats left an extra hole on each side of the floor. Rather than fill it up with a bolt, I left as is and consider it a drain hole just in case.

I guess that's why the Bugeyes had just the rubber mat and no carpet originally.

I like the idea of easily removable carpet. I've got what's in there for now, but eventually I'll need to replace it all and I'm thinking of ease of use.
 
solution for quick seat removal if you insist on putting carpet under them

weld or bolt hood pins in the place of seat bolts, glue 1/2" rubber bushing to hood pin at the seat.
Then uanother 1/2"rubber bushing to your hood pin washer and glue to bottom of car (use proper glue), Then adjust your clevis pin snug when installed.

Now when you want to remove seats you just pull the four (hood) pins and jerk the seat out.

With a seat belt on you don't need to worry about the safty of seat being bolted tightly
