I'm looking at replacing the carpeting in my Spit this fall, and on some initial investigation I've noticed that some of the hold-down snaps riveted to the floor are missing. Anybody know where to get replacements? I've seen reference in some messages here to a TRF carpet install kit for a TR6 that contains them, would that work? I can't find any good info from TRF on Spitfires.

On a related note, why do all the suppliers but VB seem to not be overly interested in spits other than the 1500? I sometimes feel like I'm drifting in the wind out here in early spit land...

Those are the carpet side of the snap, I presume. Not the floor side of the snap that rivets in.
 
I think what you are looking for is like paying VB, TRF, or Rimmer Bros $.95 for a $.06 bolt at True Value hardware. Try Autozone. They have a whole rack of interior clips, snaps and rivets.
 
Spitguy-

Look in your local yellow pages for the folks
who make custom boat covers or custom awnings.
Those folks have a gazillion different types
of snaps.... tops and bottom rivet pieces.

You also might consider using commercial grade
velcro for some of the really difficult to reach
snap areas. Commercial grade adhesive and the velcro
areas work quite well.

Yeah, yeah it's probably a DPO stunt and certainly
won't pass inspection in the fancy A$$ car competitions
but it works just fine and gets you back on the road
driving.

A young fella named Amos taught me the velco trick;
because a whole bunch of rivet bottoms were removed
from my car by the DPO so he could glue his K-mart
special carpet directly to the floor pans..

Also good thoughts, thanks! I'm trying to stay as original as I can, so I'd rather skip the Velcro trick, even though it probably works fine.

I did notice that McMaster-Carr has rivet style male snap halves, but I don't think they're quite the same height as the ones in the car. The ones in the car are about twice the height of what I'd expect(??).

I noticed that on mine too. I think that is so as it quickly starts to rust and decay we would always have something to snap it to. Those Brits were always thinking about us.
 
I'll 2nd Tinster's suggestion about boat and RV dealer also try upholsterers and fabric shops, that's were I got mine for another project
Don't ask if it is done yet,OK ?

We're never really ever done.

We just have these things for awhile, to get them ready for the next owner. Then, it's their turn.
 
Adding to all the suggestions here about upholstery shops etc...marine dealers sell these snaps also, and if you want (and are willing to pay for) stainless steel, they have them.

I'm with tinster, however, on the velcro idea. Its cheaper, faster, more flexible in terms of getting the carpets to stay where you want them, it doesn't rust, you don't have to drill or screw holes in the floors, etc. Just don't use too much of it.
 
Marine hardware stores like West Marine carry stainless snaps both sides. They come in a variety of types including rivet and screw. They also have the tools the install the fabric side of the snap.
