Hi all, the 67 tr4a is going to paint next week, and following its return i'm going to install a new carpet kit.is there anything I should be aware of or any tricks or tips? whats a good sound barrier to use between the floor and carpet? thanx in advance.

Several good products out there. Whatever you use, don't glue it down under the seats!

and stay away from the cheapo sets on ebay
a buddy bought one and I was not impressed with quality, fit and now waiting to see how functional the fibers are

I spared nothing on my 66 TR4A

I ordered the fitted jute "under carpet" kit and 100 percent (maybe 90) thick black wool kit from Rimmer Bros. in England. The pieces are nice and heavy, and have vinyl trim stitched along the fringes.

I also ordered the lift-the-dot fasteners and hidden snaps, and went a bit overboard fitting everything to avoid wrinkles and bulges. Some of the snaps and lift-the-dots are right on the transmission tunnel, screwed into fiberglass reinforced areas.

I used no glue. Everything snaps in and out.

I tried to reach perfection, but failed. There are a couple of areas I'd do differently.

For instance, trying to put that center saddle piece back over the thick carpet was really a pain. I trimmed a bit too much in the process.

Also, be careful how you fit the carpet to the front and rear of that saddle. The vinyl seam is supposed to just meet the front of the saddle. Mine is a bit too far forward.

Best of luck to you.

I agree. In fact, don't glue any of the pieces that lay flat. Instead, use snaps or velcro.

'Cause sooner or later you'll have to do this:

Yep - definitely one of those "when - not if" things!

Ha-ha-ha.........

Does that bring back memories and not just of the TR6 or TR8.

I bought the "underlayment" in bulk from an upholsterer. His instructions were to trace each carpet piece onto the backing and make the cut 3/4" inside the line to allow the edges to lay down naturally.

Very easy and a great $ savings.

Thanks doug. can you use somthing like spray 90 or another arosal adhesive to glue the two together?

I have also used bulk underlayment (gray, not jute). I did not glue it to the carpet -- it lays just fine w/o it (where can it go anyway) and when it has to come out for drying it dries faster with the thick underlayment hung separately.

Had one GT6 owner tell me that if I used dynomat on my car, the floor would rust out! :confuse:

My car came with a new carpet kit. Some of the foam had be nibbled on by a mouse I think before I got it. Ive only test fitted two things, the wheel arches, and they already dont even fit. Probably would have been fine if they didnt cut a section out in the wrong area. I also tested the transmission tunnel cover, and it doesnt quite fit right either. Looked the company up and it seems the kits hes selling looks slightly different than the one I got. I cant contact him about it though because it was purchase in 2007 by the previous owner. But I'll have to make do anyway.

The last carpet kit I got wasnt installed untill a year after purchase. It was black, installed in a barely legal tinted vehicle for a year. (long abandoned project) So after 2 years went by I finally notice that the carpet had turned GREEN!!! And since it was a project things were laying all over, so you have black squares and other patches which had blocked the sun. They had been making car carpets for years so I tried to contact them... ...sites gone!!! I eventually found the receipt but by that time, my husband sold the car, green carpet included.

I did glue mine. I believe I used a 3M aerosol upholstery adhesive. I don't remember if I just sprayed the carpet back, or if I sprayed both mating surfaces. Haven't had any problems with it pulling apart.
