Carpet installation

So, in between feedings and diaper changes, I'm hoping to get a new carpet kit installed in the Midget over the course of the next week or two (gotta set reasonable goals  ) I'm wondering two things:
1) Is a backing/underlayment really necessary?
2) What type of glue/adhesive should be used?

I think I remember helping my dad put in a carpet kit once with contact cement to metal and no underlayment but I also remember that it seemed like there should be some better way.

Also, I'm not really too concerned about sound and heat insulation so that's not really an issue. Mostly I'm wondering if it will fit correctly. I dropped in a piece of the trans tunnel cover and it seemed like it was bulging like it needed something under it. If I do put something under it, can I just use residential carpet underlayment like some people suggest? Dyna-mat would be awesome but is financially out of the question. Anyway, any pointers or advice will be welcomed!

I didn't use underlayment and glued in with Contact Cement - worked perfectly. Everything is glued, except, under seats, in leg areas, over transmission - these are velcroed in.

Go slow, stretch tight. The only cutting you will have to do is the wheel humps at the back. - got my seamstress wife to make the V cuts - and you can't see anything.

I have used a foiled back insulator from Home Depot on line, then used 3M spray adhesive #90. In my Midget and my Spit. Works very well.

OK. I think 3M Spray-90 is what my Dad and I used when we did it the last time. I just wasn't sure if there was something better.

Thanks,
JACK

Good stuff. I recomend padding as it helps fill in low spots and wrinkles. You have to rememeber mine is a home rolled "kit".

I put a carpet kit into my Mk 1 Midget, and they said the carpet had been cut to allow for underlay underneath, so I put it in. I used double sided carpet tape to stick the underlay down (so that I could get it up if I had too,eg if it got wet) and then glued the carpet to the underlay using ados F2 painted on, not sprayed. Worked fine, looks good.
