Carpet install

Got a new kit from Moss, about to put it in, of course there are no directions. Do I need to do anything special to affix the backing and carpet, or does it just sit in there?

Also, I have aftermarket seats in it that affix with a mounting bracket that runs perpendicular to the car. Do you think it would be better to install the carpet under the bracket, or should I notch the carpet and go metal to metal??

Cheers,
Gavin

I just got done with this job on my Tr3 -- post 60k car.

I glued the backing onto the carpet, but I didn't glue backing to all of the pieces. The carpet under the seats I didn't use any backing. I just made holes for the bolts to go through and allowed the tracks to hold it in. I would do the same with your aftermarket seats. The only place I used backing, was on the rear shelf, both top and vertical section, and the sections of carpet in front of the seats that run up the firewall... but only as far as the firewall. Those are the only sections I put the backing on. Some guys like to back everything, but I don't think it's neccessary. The only other piece I might consider backing is the tranny tunnel.

Did you get any snaps (Moss part # 228-128)?? You'll need about 12-18 of those depending on where and how many snaps you want to install. Those snaps are so good and very easy to install.

Notching the carpet so it can be R&Red w/o removing the seat tracks can be very useful if your driving habits occasionally provoke a good soaking. You can't dry the carpet in the car, you will want to remove it and hang it up if its soaked. This is a cinch if it is not bolted in place.

Agree. I cut out around my seat tracks in case it gets wet and I want to remove it to dry.

I constantly have problems with the snaps that came with my carpet (from Moss). The black ring that holds the female part of the snap comes off. You're supposed to bend the triangle tab over the back of the carpet but several of mine keep pulling loose. PITA.

As far as backing, they came with a felt-type backing that, to me, would act like a sponge for any moisture. So I used an aluminum/plastic heat barrier (from Home Depot) and used that on my tranny tunnel and firewall, also under the front floor carpet. Easily removeable for cleaning and drying.

There is a document somewhere that dictates whoch pieces should go in first. Especially important for the rear shelf area but mostly logical. I'll look 4 it 4u.

Hey Art,

I did get the snaps, but they didn't come with instructions- where do they go? Is there a "factory" location for them or is it up to you to decide where they should go?

Cheers,
Gavin

Gavin,
I also got the moss kit and I ended up cutting around my set tracks and I ended up using double sided tape to hold the floor sections in and I used a small amount of contact cement for the tunnel and some of the rear sections. The tape has held up great so far.

Here is a shot installed, let me know if you need any specific pictures. Did you also do a trunk kit?

The snap that goes on the carpet is easy to install. Push the black pronged piece through the carpet in the position you want it. Turn it over and stab youself with the prongs so you can locate where they are. Lay the holes of the inner snap over the prongs. There are two sets of holes. Use the small round ones, not the oval shaped holes. I then pused down on the snap while I bent the prongs to the OUTSIDE of the snap. It holds much better that way then trying to bend them to the inside. I used a small pair of needle nosed pliers. Grip the prong and turn it down and out. I finished with the tap of a small hammer on each prong. They are very tight in my carpet.

My trans tunnel had four snaps on it, so I used those locations for the carpet on the tunnel. I put two on the carpet that goes in front of each seat. The front part of those carpets are held in by the clips on the firewall. I have a post 60,000 car, so I used four more snaps (two on each side flanking the driveshaft tunnel) on the carpet piece covering the rear shelf. If you opt to cut out for the seat tracks, I guess you could use more snaps to hold those down.

Hey Curt-

great looking car! I love the cream & black combo. The interior looks fantastic.

Thanks to you and Art for the the tips. I'm gonna go see what I can do today.

Someday we need to have a TR3 in black get together!
