I can't tell you how many times I said, " I'd like to have a -------" only to have one pop up shortly aftert for either free or next to nothing.

So, last week I told the wife, "Ya know, for some strange reason I'd like an early 70's Vette.

Out of the blue a guy I was once was friends with pops in and says he'll sell me his '76 Vette real cheap or I can sell it for him on consignment (read I get to play with it for a few months..)

I could sell the 6 and the Lincoln and keep it, but I really need a "real" car for bad weather.

It's tempting seeing he went through it 100%.

Re: Carful what you ask for...

I know guys who had early 70's plastic cars from General Misunderstanding. They were on the rack all the time....got to be a joke in the shops...the Flatheads stayed parked outside with the bonnets closed, the General Misunderstandings always needed something. I'd stay with steel cars.

Re: Carful what you ask for...

Nice pun BTW - Carful what you ask for.

Re: Carful what you ask for...

Just sayin'. Check on theft rates on a 79 migdet as compared to....oh, gee, an early 70's Vette?

Check the theft rate of the Honda Accord!

Re: Carful what you ask for...

I'd say that if you can do it without overextending yourself, then go for it. The trick is knowing where your limits are and sticking to them. Life is short, and we're car people after all -- meaning we go through these things and try *lots* of stuff out.

As long as you can still meet your other transportation needs and don't go into hock for it, at least try it out.

Re: Carful what you ask for...

Guy I worked with years ago had a mid 70s vette. Car was always broken, and he didn't abuse it. Fortunately for him he decided on the dealer sponsored extended warranty as over the 18 months or so he had it there was something like 10k worth of work done, and it still didn't run right.

Re: Carful what you ask for...

Well now;
Here we have the old saga, stereotype.
I have been a mechanic for 40 years.
Every make and model has good and bad.
Mercedes that had to be bought back because they were virtually junk, and Chevettes that ran forever.
If you use a vehicle for its intended use, it does the job.
And, btw, the theft rate on new cars,Accords included, is way down because of computers and chipped keys.
When Accords were vulnerable, so were almost all other makes, just not as desirable.

Re: Carful what you ask for...

Drew, it's free till I sell it. That should take about three or four months. Just long enough for me to get burnt out on it.

Re: Carful what you ask for...

70's Vettes are not chipped keys. We were talking 70's Vettes and 79 Midgets, not Hondas, which, granted, are very high theft rates...still.

Re: Carful what you ask for...

I just went back 7 years on the top ten list of stolen cars.
"NOT ONCE" is Honda Accord listed, or any Corvettes, or Midgets, but Hummers and Escalades and MUSTANGS.
This list includes cars stolen in the year of listing, and compiled all years of cars taken.
For the most part, they are old beaters from the early 90'S that had no built in theft protection and are not considered valuable, so are left out at inopportune times.
My original point was, any manufacturer can produce both good and bad products. Part of the issue is how they are serviced and how they are used.
If not used for the intended purpose, the car will not hold up.
It is not the builder's fault, but the user's and it is, certainly, not the nameplate on the front.
