Carburettor oil

Nay, the little piston you lift to add/check the dashpot oil pulled out completely...what is that correctly called?
 
Oh, that's supposed to happen...screw off the little black cap & lift the entire cap & damper out of the hole.
 
Mine has always hung before and I assumed it wasn't supposed to pull out all the way...thanks, Tony!

My 76 B is a pig...I think that my wife's bug could outrun it with a plug wire disconnected. I've noticed that I can top off the carb and run it for an hour, check it and its empty?? I've owned dozens of cars with side drafts and never had this problem. It is also nearly impossible to start in cold weather. I've decided that since the clutch is getting weak, I'm going to pop the eng/trans, change the clutch set, drop an o/d trannie in, rip the carb off and replace with a set of duals..and finally replace the exhaust systen the dosen't sound like a Briggs and Stratton roto-tiller. I love the car..but its hard to jump in and drive, especially after tooling around in the C.
 
Your ZS is leaking around the piston diaphragm...carb is probably ready for a rebuild
 
After reading that low oil will cause hunting at idle, (happy to report the timing issue is resolved and now at least I'm idling!) I decided to look at the level of oil in the 66. Since I don't know what kind of oil the PO used, or didn't, I may just change it all out. Should I bother as long as the oil looks clean, it does. Does it matter if there are two diffeent weights of oil in there?
 
It's so easy to clean that there is no reason not to. Simply remove the dashpot cover (3 screws), pull the piston out, clean with brake cleaner, fill piston tube, and finally reassemble. Then do the other one. Don't do them both at once if you can help it. You don't want to mix the pistons up as they are factory fit to their respective carburetor body.

Nope. You will find that the oil is in a small metal tube with nowhere to leak from. It's a LOT more simple inside that carb than people realize until the first time they take the cover off.

Shouldn't be topping them up...only put in about 1/3 of the pipe full; that's why the carbs are sucking them down.

I use SU carb. oil. Of course, I have no leakage problem and very rarely need to add oil. Hap rebuilt them and their like new. PJ
