TR4/4A Carburetor float bowls

One of my carburetors was leaking profusely from the float bowl. I opened up and saw the gas was over three-fourths to the lid. Changing back and forth between the stock float needle and the Grose Jet version did nothing. After three tries gasoline continue to pour out of the float bowl. I'm stumped by this, and I am ordering a new float needle and seat. Could the problem be the absence of a fiber washer? Does the fiber washer actually seal the seat inside the bowl?

The fiber washer acts as a spacer for the float valve...that could cause your problem.

Use the fiber washer for the seal and adjust your float height accordingly if necessary.

I just bought new floats, needles and seats. There is no fiber washer, and no part number for a fiber washer even though the Moss Catalogue shows one--but without an ordering number. The Moss salesperson said it was included, but it's not included. Is it really necessary?

I bought my rebuild kits from Joe Curto and the washers were included. I've got a few boxes of SU parts and may have what you need...let me check.

I think I have one -- is it a thin fibre washer with ID = 2 1/16" and OD 2 5/16"?

Seems unlikely to me that this would account for your problem - but if you want to drive over and get it, I'm here and it's yours.

I was talking about the fiber washer that goes under the float valve, the little red ones. This moves the seat closer to the float arm. I do have 2 in my stash...new.

The Joe Curto floats valves may have come with aluminum washers instead of fiber washers. Regardless, they seal the joint between the float valve and the carb body. They are needed.

Needle may be sticking. Hit the float bowl with a rubber or plastic hammer one or two times and see if that doesn't cure the problem.
