carburator issue

Has anyone had this problem:

I have had my zeniths professionally rebuilt by Joe Curto, who did a very nice job. I put them back on the car, and I can never get them adjusted properly. The car would not hold an idle without the choke. In trying to investigate the problem, I detached the hoses that run from the cylinder head to the carbs and the carbon canister. I blocked off the inlets on the carbs, and everything works fine, except that the exhaust fumes come into the car.
It is a 74 TR6. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rob

Just a thought, do those lines have the restrictors at the carbs ?

Might also be an ignition problem (oddly enough); by 74 the idle mixture was supposed to be very lean (for emissions) and a lean mixture is harder to fire.

Make sure your hose routing is correct for a 74. It varied by year. There are several different ports on the carbs, that do different things.

Another possibility is a clogged carbon canister or anti-runon solenoid. Having the solenoid miswired can also cause problems with lack of fuel at idle (since that is exactly what it does when it's activated).
