Carbs?

And I'm not talkin' pasta.

What I'd like to know is when did Strombergs start replacing SUs on TR4s? Also, did the TR4a ever come with SUs? The reason I ask is when I bought my TR4, I got a truck load of extras with it. Including a nice set of SU-HS carbs. The car had Strombergs installed and I am currently using them as I could not get the SUs running smoothly. The Strombergs are working quite well. I'm just curious as to when the switch was made from SUs to Strombergs, in order to determine which carbs were actually installed on my 63 TR4 when it rolled of the assembly line.

.........Cheers, Alex

The story that I remember reading was that Triumph went back to SUs after the British Leyland merger ('67?) because the SUs were then no longer a product made by an "outside" company and the price came down.

SUs seem to have been used on a much higher percentage of +4 Morgan engines of the TR-4A era than on Triumph TR-4A engines.

Here is the reference from the TR4 factory parts catalogue. Since the transition was not clean, you'll need to know your original engine number to be sure you are "correct".

Later TR4A did come with SU carbs, but they were SU HS6, not the H6 found on earlier TRs. A substantial improvement over the earlier carbs, but different. I don't have the change point handy, but it's in the TR4A parts catalogue.

Unfortunately the reprint of the TR4A SPC doesn't actually include the engine numbers where the change occurred(Fitted up to Engine No.... for the Strombergs and Fitted from Engine No... for the SU HS6's). Need to find someone with an original SPC.

Both of my 1966 TR4A's came with SU HS6's (CTC69123L with engine 69238E and CTC72159LO with engine 72497E).

My mistake, thought I'd seen it in the factory literature. But my TR4A SPC is a 1st edition and doesn't even list the HS6 carbs.

However, Bill Piggott gives the change point as CTC62191.
