carbs popping

hey everyone,
I was out last weekend in the tr6 and took it out on the highway. It was warmed up. Even earlier in the night I was driving on the highway at the same speed(80mph by my speedo and I know thats fast) and the carbs were fine. Then the second time on the highway the carbs started popping. Has anyone ever heard about this? I know the carbs will pop if the car isn't warmed up enough but was wondering why they were popping when the car was warm. They have only popped when i was underway that one time and they didn't pop while on city streets. Was it because i was running at highway speeds for a period of time? I don't understand so any ideas anybody has would be great. If you have any questions i'll check back and hopefully i can check them. cya later

Also I filled up with a different octane of gas if that matters.

Hi Eric,
What you describe is a bit unusual. If I made a guess, it would be weak ignition or plug problems. The only time it happened to me, was driving at night with a dead charging system. I'm sure that someone will jump in.

Well I guess it could be ignition. I never thought about it being anything other then the carbs since they pop if its not warmed up enough. I'll have to check my plugs and wires b/c they are brand new.

It could be lean mixture. You don't say what year your TR6 is. Does it have a manual choke control? If so, pulling the choke should cure a lean mixture & stop the popping.

Eric I would check the easy stuff first, maybe you overlooked something like filling the dashpots of your carbs, lack of piston damping might cause this symptom.
Possibly a timing problem, choke stuck or even valves out of adjustment and causing the problem when the car is well warmed up. Take the plugs out and see if they look either very rich or very lean.
My guess would be a rich mixture would leave unburnt fuel in the exhaust which would burn with a popping sound when you lift off the gas to slow down from high speed.

This may be a long shot. Any chance you are running electronic ignition conversion? If, the module may be going out.

Worn camshaft lobes have been known to cause a "pop" back thru the carb. Maybe a burnt intake valve. ?????
