Carbs, Carbs, Carbs...

Soo OK... I have been going absolutely nuts trying to set these carbs up... I have finally found the genesis of the problem.... Wrong Carbs.... the correct carbs should be HD6s (AUC 866 or AUC 914).. Mine are AUC 6040... ANYBODY know what the @#)(%@)#$* these carbs belong to??????

The AUC914 is a thermocarb setup and includes an enrichment carb for cold start. It was only used on a limited run of maybe 1000 cars. I have the setup. thermocarb
 
Hello Ron,

the part you quote is for a H6 body, not the carburettor specification which is usually a litlle aluminium tag screwed to the float chamber.

There is no reason that you can't get these H6 carburettors to work as well as the specified HD6's.
Your car should have a CV needle, just check to see what you have installed? I'm almost sure that both HD and H use 0.100" needles but you will need to double check that. (there is a 1 stamped on the jet if a 0.100" jet and a 9 if a 0.090" jet as used on 1.5" bore carburettors.)

What is the history of the car, has it never run correctly since you acquired it?

I also have a usable Thermo choke setup. I am curious how many others there are left. The impression I have is many were converted to manual choke for simplicity. Mine works great but for as many cars and picutres of cars I see there are many with this set up

The doc I have says they started on car 2194. My car is 3213. What is your car #? Curious. You could do a poll.

Thanks for your suggestions one and all. I sat in the garage last night and carefully unfolded the much abused thin metal tag on the float chamber on one of the carbs, CAREFULLY unfolding this fragile bit of tin. Slowly and softly brushing the 50 years of tarnish off. The number, albeit hardley readable, slowly began to appear.. Let's see, ahhh 'A', then, yes I think, 'UC' then ahh 8....6....6... the tag then gave up the ghost to become several bits of tin... Soooo, AUC 866... correct carb!!! Then I realized that whoever put these carbs back together, assembled the butterflies and all associated linkages -- well let's say incorrectly. Although faced with a rear float chamber on the front carb... We are in business...

By the way the AUC 6040 number on the housing was exactly that, the housing number.. not the carb number... This is why we love the British and their cars so much!!!

OK, one more thing, the car has not run since 1978. We purchased it roliing but with the engine disassembled and since this is my first Healey ( I have restored several MGs and Jags) it has been a joyfull learning experience.. Full frame off... Now if someone can tell me where this part goes .. ;-)
 
Soooooo One more thing then I gotta' get back to work... Thanks to Alec for elucidating me to the significance of the AUC 6040 number stamped on the housing...

Thanks to David K who started me to thinking.... A dangerous pasttime... The carbs, although marked with AUC 866 tags, are, in fact, 'H' series off of a Triumph TR2-4A... I can probably make them work but what a pain. If you know anyone that has a set of HD6s for sale or trade for these H series units, let me know. I will replace these with the correct ones. Boy, do I feel like a putz...
