carbs, carbs and more carbs

I re-installed the HIF6 on the 1380 today.
I just got the cable for the freakin' thing today.
Went on easy as pie with my super skinny 1/2 wrench.
Now the car won't fire and carb is leaking gas.
:madder:
Grrrrrrrr.....I mean I just got the HS4s like I want them
for those WOT kamikaze runs I like (thanks Hap) and
car was running great but didn't like idling around at red lights.
The plan was to go back to the flawlessly running HIF6
for some street time while waiting on those HS2s Hap is
building for me.
I emptied the carb before storing it last year.
Guess the float needle is stuck. It was preforming perfectly when removed last year.
Dang....now I have to pull this HIF6 and clean 'er up.
What is the best procedure for storing the carb?
Shoot WD40 on it after it is cleaned?
I don't want the HS4s to be non-functioning if they get re-installed for specific use later on.

I'd use Marvel oil or ATF, but NOT WD-40. Best thing is to dry 'em out completely, tho.

Why pull the carb to free the float valve.

Bet I can do it in 30 seconds with nothing more than a screw driver.

In fact some times just a sharp tap on the outside of the float bowl will do it.

Thanks Doc....I "thought" I'd dried it out completely.
Duh.....I guess not.
I'll try to be more anal about it this time and smear some
ATF on working parts.

The sharp tap administered with the same screwdriver... just use the handle end.

I'll give it a little tap tomorrow before I take it off.
The HIF6 has the float chamber in the carb and I feared
losing something when I take the bottom off.
I'll tap first and go from there.
Thanks!

One thing to be sure of is that you have the fuel hose hooked up to the correct fitting on an HIF - one of us in this conversation hooked the fuel hose into the outlet fitting once and had a real mess! (I won't admit that it was me!!).

Thankfully I had these pics to follow.

You Sir are a genius! Two taps with a screwdriver this morning before I left for work. BINGO! Fired instantly. Runs great.

Funny how many things on these lovable little critters you have to slap upside the head every now-and-then just to get their attention. :driving:

I know I should probably fix my tach, but for some strange reason I get a sense of satisfaction having to tap it to get it to move after the engine is started.

LOL Not only am I a genius I have been doing this for most of 50 years now. I am too old to work hard at it.

My Dad used to say he doesn't work hard....he works smart.
Sounds like another follows that adage.

People look at you funny when you "whack" your carburetors... but I've had to do it several times over the years. It's amazing what a little percussive maintenance can achieve.

Once had the SU pump in the MGB fail half way across Alligator Alley. Always carried a large Lake Erie rock on the back floorboard (dual use: E-brake chock and pump persuader), whacked the rear bulkhead wifit every 15 seconds or so to get to Miami. Fitted a Facet in the in-laws front yard and it still pumps... that was in 1990. Just too lazy to mount an SU to replace a perfectly working pump. But the rock is still back there, as insurance.

Had a friend who carried a short piece of 2 by 4 for years in his MGB as a fuel pump persuader!

Kurt.

Well, it sat all day unmolested by my shadetree hands.
This evening....rrrrr...varoom. Didn't even have to open the door, just reach in and pull.
Has a nice 1100 rpm idle. The HIF6 is smooth as silk.
I'll just have to learn to love it.....
Easily a better total performance carb compared with the HS4s.
Total being the operative word. I can now drive the thing in
the city without fouling worries and having to constantly
"clear it's throat".
It looks naked under the bonnet with one carb however.
I ain't done yet.

mehheh.

I have to constantly fettle the throttle on the Alfa at idle... I did some "emotional" mods back when I built the engine (2000): 11MM lift "European" cams (slightly changed overlap, too), 40 DCOE's, smidge higher compression.

It can be a chore in traffic but every time I hit the loud pedal I'm exhonerated for my poor judgement. :smirk:
