I not sure where the best place to post this is, so I thought here would be OK. I have a lawnmower engine that smokes pretty bad. I think the oil ring is broken or gummed up. I'm going on the premise that it is gummed up before I junk it. Does anyone have any suguestions on what to use? I have heard Marvel Mystery Oil works well, but I have never tried it. Any help would be great.

Mailbox, Marvel Mystery oil is quite a product but, it's not a miracle worker. With the symptoms you describe, I'd pull the piston out and install new rings as long as the cylinder is not scored to badly. Otherwise, unless it's a fairly new mower, I wouldn't fool with it. JMHO. PJ
 
Yea, I know. Just looking for the cheap way. I thought someone might have one of those old mechanic tricks up their sleeve.
 
might try some SeaFoam.

I had rough running and black smoke in my 20 year old Craftsman mower.

Running SeaFoam through it cleared up those problems. You may have *different* problems ... but it worked for me.

Blue. It's oil burning.
 
It can't hurt to try some MMO or SeaFoam. But it sounds like th' thing's an EX-mower.

One common mistake people tend to make with small engines is, <span style="font-weight: bold">some</span> call for NON detergent oil and they use detergent oil anyway!

Another is, typicaly they call for straight weight oil and people tend to use what they have on hand, typically 10-40.

Thirdly, Typicaly people tend to neglect these small engines
the oil should be changed yearly {every spring}. Not only that but checked frequently and oil added as needed.

If it`s smokin` blue smoke, it`s too late to do anything except put up with the smoke and fouled plug until it either pukes a rod or looses enough compression that it refuses to start anymore. Run Her till she dies completely! Then buy a new mower!
