Carb Rebuilders

OK, I am about ready to throw these _____'ing H4 carbs out the window. I cannot get the front carb to stop overflowing from the nut on top of the float bowl lid. What's frustrating is that I was planning on talking it to the Houston All British show this coming weekend, and the car is running fine with the exception of the leak.

I know that this is an operator problem, and I am not getting something right, so think I need to send these off to a pro before I pull a DPO move. Who have you guys used for rebuilds, especially for SU H series carbs?

I miss the Sprite and MGB's HS's, they seemed significantly easier to set up.

Thanks
Patton

Hi Patton, Joe Cutro has a good reputation for rebuilding the SU Carbs.-Keoke

OK , the SU float bowl works on a pretty simple theory , the petrol is pumped in to the bowl ,the float inside the bowl rises with the increased level of petrol and raises the forked pivot lever that then starts to come in to contact with the plunger of the needle valve controling the amount of fuel pumped into the float bowl and eventually shutting off the supply . Firstly does your float bowl contain all the components ,float ,forked pivot and needle valve ? if so there are then four possible reasons for overflow .
1. the float itself is punctured and is not rising as it should as it will be full of petrol .
2. the forked pivot is binding on the central stud of the float bowl.
3. the bend in the forked pivot may not be to the correct dimension ( I can't remember exactly the setting dimension at the moment, but it is given in most Healey workshop manuals )
4. The needle valve is worn and not sealing correctly .
Please check these items before resorting to specialist help as the solution may be very simple once identified .
I hope these quick checks may help .
Regards , Mark

About a year ago, when my BJ8 was running badly, I drove in to see Joe Curto. She quit running on me a few blocks from his shop. I called Joe and told him where I was, but in the mean time got it started. I passed Joe walking down the street toward me with a screw driver in his hand.
Back at his shop, he tweeked the carbs, sold me the rebuild kits and sent me on my way with some good advice.
He IS Mr. S.U. in my book. joecurto.com

Hi Mark, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif The SU Carbs are quite simple and most DIY's should be able to sort the problem out.-Keoke
