I finally finished the carb rebuild on the TD. Thanks to those who offered much needed information. If you'd like to see a few before and after photos check out:

We'll see how I do setting them up when I get them back on the car. You'll probably bee hearing some more stooopid questions from me before it's all done! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Best regards,
Marty

Look great. Not too bad, huh? They will be much easier to set up now that they are freshly rebuilt.

Mt dad just started rebuilding his TC carbs....almost finished one but relised moss's "master kit" doesn't included needles when their standard kit does so were stuck waiting for new parts...The 61 MGA is also waiting for a rebuild so I guess we'll be pretty good at this by the time thats done!...I'll post before and after pics of the TC carbs once I load some onto the computer.

They weren't hard to rebuild at all. Having torn them down and rebuilt them, I think I now have a real appreciation for the SU design. Very elegant in its simplicity.

Easier to setup freshly rebuilt? I hope so...we shall see!

I really didn't appreciate the SU either 'til I rebuilt mine. What a wonderful simple carb.

Did you replace the shafts? That's where they can really leak and cause problems if worn.

Hi Marty, my hat's off to you on the carb rebuild. I too have a 1952 TD that I bought last year, late summer. It has had similar problems with carbs and fuel system and oil seals. I pulled the engine and installed a Moss rear seal conversion kit & new front seal. I didn't feel confident enough to rebuild the carbs myself so I sent them to Lawrie Alexander at British Sports Car Center a week ago. Glad to hear things are going well. I am hoping for the same success with mine.
Rick

Did you replace your shafts? My forward carb seems to have brass (I think) bushings in the carb body in the shaft holes, while the rear carb doesn't. They don't seem to have much "play" in them soooo...

I didn't replace the shafts this time around. Maybe it's not the wisest philosophy, but there was so much else wrong with them (bad seals, munged-up linkages, etc.) that I decided to fix all that first -- and see what effect that has -- and replace the shafts later if needed. I think most would say "replace 'em while you have the things on the bench," but I'm not on the clock! The leaking jets were a safety hazard, I think. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Shafts weren't bad here either but we repplaced them anyway....the kit from moss doesn't have the holes for the stopper predrilled so you have to drill it yourself...not to easy lol
