ok im rebuilding the carb and taking photos as i go

the throttle shaft dose seem abit warn so that must have been my Vacuum leak. the SU kit has 4 "throttle spindle bush"s I think one goes on each end side of the throttle spindle but im not seeing the old one in there to press out. is it just really mated to the metal? did this one not have one originally?

Im tring to behave and do this the right way

I do not think they originally came with those throttle spindle bushes. That must be an upgrade! Good idea though...I have seen some well-worn shafts before!!
 
i think the second one will be worse. but I drill out the area? I should have started this monday so i could walk over to the mg shop on the other side of town.

Ya need to ream the carb body to fit the bushes, the ream MUST be on-center and aligned to do it correctly. I'd say talk to the shop guys first. If you've no way to set up a fixture to hold the body it may be best to have a machine shop do that deed.

The shafts originally rode in the body without bushes.
 
There was a thread about fitting the bushings within the past 6 weeks. You may want to try searching to see if you can locate it. There were several suggestions on how best to do this IF you decide to take the task on yourself as opposed to having a machine shop fit the bushings.

Before you do opt for the bushings, check how the new shafts fit in the carb body. If most or all of the apparent wear is on the shaft, I wouldn't fit the bushings. I am not sure about this, but I thought there were also over-sized shafts available to handle "minor" wear in the carb body.
 
Hello Steve - reaming the the throttle area requires some precision so if you it might be best left to a professional. There are specific sized inserts that all need to fit properly.

Not trying to be discouraging, just wanted to make sure you know. I've seen more than one pair that was ruined.

ok ill take it to the shop, the shafts do fit well
but if the carbs are better off long term with the races I might as well do it now during the winter

The carbs already lasted long term without bushings. You may reconsider since only the shafts are hammered after the fisrt 40 years.
 
I second what the experts say: "HS2 rarely need anything but new shafts" I should do this to mine this winter. I tore them down last winter, didn't replace a single part, just to play. Threw them on the car and I liked them better than the Weber so they stayed on all summer but I suspect I have some air leakage around the shafts. I'll put new shafts on myself and save the shop fees for other things.
