Carb insulator question

Brian,
I think that each carb needs an insulating block plus a gasket on each side of the block. Three pieces. Your old ones may have the gaskets stuck to the block. Also, if you have the heat shield an additional gasket is needed between the shield & carb. One block & four gaskets for each carb. Total - two #696-000 blocks & eight #696-010 gaskets.

You are right, the heat shield goes behind the carb and outboard of the insulators. That is how things were set up when I took the stuff off. The pic on page 88 of Anderson and Moment seems to show that with two insulator pieces at each carb.

Here is what I took off each carb and what Moss sent me for each carb:

Am I to have THREE of the new black pieces for each carb? The book specifies two as the total quantity required.

What goes back on? One, two, or three of the new pieces at each carb? I'm kind of wondering what other people have done.

(Also, I have plenty of gasket in the carb rebuild kits.)

I don't know what to think. The controling factors would be, stud length, carb linkage alignment, air filter clearance, & possibly some other clearances. As far as insulating function I doubt if it matters much. Hopefully someone with the same car will lend an answer. Although on cars this old it is likely that there could be many changes from original by now.

The definitive answer for originality, if it is important would come from Rich Chrysler of the "list". Also there are concours guidelines published if you were that serious.

I personally would suggest doing what ever you are comfortable with.

The forum search just seemed to loop and never end, so I will ask somthing that has probably been asked before.

This week end I am rebuilding the carburetors for the BT7. The manifold currently has what looks to be original insulating blocks between the manifold and the carb, these three layer affairs. The Moss catalog specificed 2 required, so I ordered two, thinking they were either thicker or a set of three pieces each.

Well, they are just single pieces each, only about as thick as one of the three pieces currently on the car.

The photos in the resto books seem to show three piece insulators, kind of like what I'm starting out with. But is this correct? Or is the single piece insulator from Moss correct? Will a single piece do enough insulating work? Help me out here. I'm confused.
 
Brian, sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. I'll send you a separate email with photos taken from the official "Service Parts List." A word of caution, when you tighten down the insulators go slowly. They are easy to crack. You only need to snug them down tight.
From the Service Parts List D.19 it shows what appears to be 3 insulators that are to go on the intake manifold first. When they list the insulators, however they only say 2 are required. Then the heatshield, and finally the carbs. Of course there are the gaskets. Here is where it gets confusing. I'll send you a picture of the text as well. A lot depends on the engine number as you'll see.
