The heat shield on my car looks different that any of the others I have seen. Any thoughts on where this one came from? Or is it original and the new ones are different. The PO upgraded to 1.25" carbs. Main difference is the big bump in the middle.
Rut, Interesting point. I checked my engine and noticed a square "bump-out" on the exhaust manifold that sits right into the bump on the heat shield. Is my exhaust manifold not the original? Engine is a 948.
David,
my 948 exhaust manifold does not have that plate on it. Mine looks more like a 1275 exhaust manifold than that one. The heat shield is the same except for the modified part. Are you going to use a 948 or 1275?
Rut
The 948 runs good, I just pulled it out to paint the car. It was rebuilt about 9000 miles ago in the early 80's. Compression is still good. But I would LOVE to have a 1275.
I wonder what the plate on mine is for? A little googling shows both styles, but mostly without the plate.
Davd, the 948 went into alot of things. The BE exhaust manifold didn't have the riser. At least mine didn't. Your's must have been sourced from somewhere else.

Over the years there were three different exhaust manifolds. The one with the flat top, original 948, the 1098 that is smooth and looks like the 1275 header. The 1275 header that will only fit on the 1275 engine. The 1098 header on a 948 gives 2 additional horse power fits and hooks right up.
Thanks for the clarification Jack, This is a 2 owner car, I was pretty sure everything was original other than the carbs (I have the originals too). Since the motor is out, maybe I"ll try to find a 1098 exhaust manifold and get the extra 2 HP!
