carb dampers

My HD8's have the black plastic caps on the dampers. They are cracked but functional. They are vented. Can I replace them with the brass ones? Is the venting necessary? Can the brass ones be drilled to make them work? Thanks.

Boy - You ask some strange questions. I won't ask why?

Surely, someone out there has investigated this before, but not me. I'll speculate but may regret it.

If you can find brass dampers of the correct size, (same length & diameter as your present ones) you could drill vent holes in them. They definitely need a vented cap. I "think" that the damper length varies with the bore diameter, so brass dampers from smaller bore carbs would be too short. Maybe I'm wrong. If you can get a look at some brass ones you can compare the length & the diameter of the valves.

The only other two inch SU of the old style (brass cap) that I know of would be the old H8 carbs, SU #AUC777. These carbs were on a select few 1954 - 1956 Jag XK140SE models. The SU part number for the H8 brass dampers would be AUC8105. You may find them if you look around.

Might possibly get your damper rods out of the plastic caps & fit them to brass caps. Don't bend the rods even a little or things will not work until they are perfectly straight.
Have Fun,

Ah, Dave. I do it just to see if I can challenge you. But you always come back with great advice. Actually I was woundering if they would be interchangeable so I wouldn't have to change them again in 40 years and they look nice. But I think I'll stay with the original looking ones so I don't screw things up. As always, thinks.

Hello TH,

there is no problem, if you wish to order replacement dampers from Burlen (www.burlen.co.uk)simply add a suffix to the part number which is AUC 8112 for a BJ8 on HD8 carburettors.
The suffixes are:- HB for hexagon brass or RB for knurled round brass. There are also:-
R* round brass with vent hole lettered oil reservoir.
V round brass with vent hole.
BO round brass with slot, vent hole and lettering use bicycle oil.
S round brass with slot and vent.

so if you want a HD8 BJ8 replacement damper with a vented brass cap, quote part number AUC 8112V.

By the way, for those not aware, Burlen make and sell SU spares for carburettors, fuel pumps and auto enrichment devices. They took over all the tooling from S.U.
