Carb Choices

If you had your choice of carb or carbs to put on a MK3 1300 what would they be. I just got off the phone with the guy I am getting my Spit from and he is throwing extra everything in the trunk. 3 weber side drafts, intakes for a single or dual setup and even an intake for a GT6 to accept the carbs!!!
Oh yeah and of course the stock intake and strohm.

Unless your engine is substantially modified, or unless you're looking to do so, I suspect your best bet is the Dual SU HS2 carburetors that came with Mk3 Spitfires from 1967-69. A single Weber sidedraft might be ok IF you can get it jetted properly. Meanwhile, there really isn't anything all that bad about the single Stromberg 150CD, although you MIGHT see a gain of a few HP by using a stock Mk3 dual SU setup compared to the single Stromberg.

A bit of this depends quite a bit on the camshaft itself. Some of the most knowledgeable folks around claim that the "emissions" camshaft used on 1969-70 "Federal" Mk3 Spitfires is about the worst-ever cam in a Spitfire! But my long-gone '69 Mk3 seemed pretty strong even in stock emissions-controlled form!

Personally I'd go with the SUs or Strombergs. They have the best street manners, and are easy to work on.( but then again I'm a bit of a fuddy duddy in that respect) I'd be more than glad to give a hand tuning them when the time comes, I've done many many sets. I'm right around the corner.
The Webbers are an amazing carb, but they tend to be geared more for racing applications. they're more of an on-off switch than a controllable acceleration. But some guys like that, so I guess it's all in what your looking for. A note on DCOE Webbers. the best thing about them is that they are infinatly adjustable. and the worst thing about them is that they are infinatly adjustable. ( and the adjustments are made by swapping out parts $$$$)

I had the Dual SU's on my MG and loved tinkering with the flow meter and getting them set. I would love to find a set.
maybe I need to put these up for sale and use the proceeds to finance the car.....

When the car shows up Banjo, I'll drop you a line.
