carb adjustment

69tr

As you might guess, I have a '69 TR6 with the non-adjustable carbs. I was going to order a used set from Team Triumph. Scotty says they are from a '72 and should be adjustable.

I talked to a very reputable Triumph restorer this week and he told me that none of the Stromburgs could be adjusted. He says that there is not enough adjustment to make any difference. I have seen some of you guys talking about adjusting the post '69 carbs. Am I missing something?

Thanks, Pete

Not sure what your "reputable restorer" is on about; but the adjustment found on the later ZS carbs is definitely effective. The range is not as huge as with earlier carbs, but easily covers "too lean" to "too rich".

Of course, there are no doubt some carbs running around where the adjustment is off the end of the threads (making it ineffective) or otherwise damaged.

Check out Nelson's article at

for some 'real world' tests on ZS carb mixture adjustment.

Carbs from a 72 are good carbs, but you are going to have to deal with the vacuum advance found on the 69 dizzys, if you still have the original distributor set-up.
As they came, there is but one vacuum nipple on the 72-73 and that's for the other vacuum unit, the timing retard unit that's on the cockpit side of the dizzy housing.
Carbs from a 70 - 71 would be a better choice for a 69 dizzy.
