Car transporter...

Moderator (Reid) if this is in the wrong place, please let me know.

So now I need to have the car (from my earlier "I need help" post) moved to Allen Hendrix's shop in N.C. The guy that does Allen's transports is busy with his real job and can't get to me for a few weeks, so I'm looking at transport companies.

I've already contacted Intercity Lines, and have a quote from them. That's who I'll be going with unless...

Does anyone know of a smaller, very reliable service? It's not so much the cost as I expect them to all be about the same. It's more the timeframe. Intercity can't pick it up until the end of the week or this weekend. They will then deliver it a few days later, as they will be making stops on the way.

If someone knows of a smaller operation that they have used and can recommend, I'd like to check with them to see about their availability.

Car is currently located in Wakefield, RI and needs to get to Greensboro, NC. I'd like it done as soon as possible (next couple of days if possible). The distance is just under 670 miles.

P.S. - Yes, I've considered renting a truck and trailer and doing it myself. But just getting back from vacation, that's not an option with work right now.

Is Intercity a transport copmpany or a broker? You should ask them. I had a terrible time moving my Bugeye from Fl to Md last year, going through brokers. The time estimate for pickup was very fluid, it kept moving further into the future after I submitted a deposit. Check with them, see if they guarantee the pickup date.

Good Luck!!

I had a lot of trouble last year at the VTR nationals in Philly... I bought a spitfire at auction... wound up so disgusted, I sold it to a local for a 20% profit.

The problem is the brokers keep a list of pick-up locations, and the truckers call in when they have to fill out a load. There's a lot of switching back and forth as they fill their truck, and sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. I got lucky, and hooked up with an independent trucker from Florida who was coming my way. Did this outside of the brokerage firm. Once we made the deal, I had the car in three days.

They are the transporter. They will only guarantee the pick-up date/time to a point. In other words, if a customer is late with the car before you, it may change your time a bit.

Company is highly recommended, but again, I am asking if someone knows of a smaller operation as they tend to only have trailers big enough for one or two cars, so the service tends to be direct.

Sorry, but I didn't mean to start a thread that would turn into a discussion about transporters vs. brokers. The focus of my question is:

If someone knows of a smaller operation that they have used and can recommend, I'd like to check with them to see about their availability.

I've got a good, reputable service already quoted. But they are large and the service will not be direct. I'm only looking for a smaller operation as the timeframe for pick-up is tight. My car is at another person's house who was kind enough to let me leave it there. They are traveling soon, and I've been enough of a burden. I need to get it moved.

The ONLY thing I'm asking for is if anyone has a specific, small transport service that they have used.

Thanks,
Devin

I have used a comapny called Transport Services for 2 cars and had good results. They are a brokerage but have been reliable and among the best prices I've found after hours of canvassing. I contacted a guy named Richard at (877)288-6718x234. If you are doing any moving around the central area of the country, I have used a guy that was one of the subs. Don't remember his name but the phone was (770)337-5842. He is only rarely on the east coast. Transport Services should be able to handle a tight time frame.

Thanks to all that replied (publicly and privately). After calls to several companies, the car is finally and safely on its way to the shop.

I'm a little slow on the response, but here's my thoughts anyway...

I've used Intercity many times. I've always been pleased with the results, response, care for the car, and the price has been reasonable for level of service received.

Passport (aka FedEx) also provides a reliable service, & cover more regions, but their price tends to be higher. (They do provide instant on-line quotes, which can be handy if trying to obtain a quick estimate of shipping costs...)

Enclosed Vehicle Transport is a company that uses 2-3 car car hauler enclosed trailers pulled by duallys. Service is door-to-door, no in-transit unloading/reloading, and response is fast! They do tend to cost a few $$ more than the others, but service is excellent.

:nonono: :nonod:AVOID Sureway Transportation (based in OR) & Anderson Trucking (based in MN)!! :nonod: :nonono: These are shipping brokers that I made the HUGE Mistake of using earlier this year.
Despite stated guarantees, they have never reimbursed me for damages incurred during shipping!! :frown: After more than 6 months of haggling, and getting nowhere, I finally turned the matter over to my insurance company. (BTW: The insurance company is now going after them for the damages AND the shipping charges!! They should have settled w me directly.... would have been much cheaper....)

Cheers!

Thanks.

I was going to use Intercity, but due to the tight time-frame, they couldn't get to me. The people who were kind enough to let me leave my car at their home were leaving for their vacation, and the car needed to be picked up in a specific timeframe. Too bad, because they were about $400 cheaper than who I used...

Funny you mention Enclosed Vehicle Transport, because that's who I went with. They are everything you say.

Car was loaded yesterday morning and is on its way now.
