Can't figure out how to do a survey, so low tech. As some know my car is dead. (Yes I know, mostly dead is not the same as all dead) but, a quart of oil every 120 miles and rust and dead catalytic converters on a 9 year old car is enough to find a new one.

So,

Honda Fit Sport. Far roomier than it looks, was getting 40 mpg on the freeway (with 5-speed), mpg rarely went below 36 in my driving. One of the roomiest cars around for is size. Only sold it as I needed a car with an auto that my wife could drive ( :cryin: ) and it was time to try something new.

I've got a Kia Forte 5 right now, it's a very decent car. I do miss my old Fit though. Only minor downside is that the tire size on the Fit Sport is an odd size, so new rubber can be a little bit more expensive.
 
Check out the Ford Fusion... it has great reviews.
 
2011 or 2012 Chevy Impala LT2... Less than 20k for a fully loaded car that will have little problems getting to 150k plus miles. My 2004 has 189,000 and purrs.
 
+1 on the ford focus. We have an 2008. 60k ZERO problems, Change oil and drive. 40+ mpg highway.
Element is a good choice if you need more room. I know a few people with them and they all like them
 
Kia and Hyundai are realted so I'm more for the Kia than anything else. Honda has slipped quality wise IMO but ZI still like them somewhat. Yeah, I like the Fusion but I've yet to see Ford make a smal car that will go over 150K reliably much less 250-300K. Stay away from GM stuff, HHR is one of the most uncomfortable cars I've ever sat in and I really wanted to like the car.

I say maybe Honda, Hyundai or Kia. Resale value on the Honda will be higher, Kia will be cheaper, hip hop hamster not included.
 
Focus or Cruze

If you want a van-type car, I'd get a Chrysler Mini-van.....great vehicle and very practical.

Here my thoughts

1. Chevy & Chrysler, no because errr. it's Chevy & Chrysler
2. Ford - maybe but, Fusion has the same engine as the Mazda 6 - which just died at 140k (miles)
3. Focus - I like them but, Cruze, Focus, Corolla, likely Civic and as I discovered tonight - small (I'm a big guy) and some are a tad tinny.
4. Test drove the Element, Nice but a tad basic (and this one not especially well kept)
5. Which leads to the Soul. Test drove a nice one today. enough features (sunroof especially) and big enough for me and I really like the upright seating position. Two years newer and better featured than the Element for a little less money, great gas mileage also - guess which way I'm leaning?

Yes, I'm slightly lexdysic. My brain outruns it's own ability to keep up. That and have trouble letting of the caps button.

If going German I'd say BWM. Might as well and IMO, MUCH better cars although they do have some problems with fluff.
 
I know most on here think I'm nuts, but I wouldn't buy any newer cars (anything made during or after the oil embargo). If you have to go newer I'd suggest a dodge product. The 99 grand caravan we had went over 300,000 miles before we sold it and it was still rock solid the day I got rid of it. The only work it ever needed, aside from regular maintenance, was a new drivers window regulator and motor, a new blower motor, and a new speed control for said motor.

Uuh, Rav 4???
 
The problem with the latter suggestions is that they are all outside my budget. I can get a 2010 kia for the same money as a 2006 rav4 or Subaru or a 2002 Audi. While the mileage may be OK, the potential for rust is much greater.
