Car Shows - Why are the "Special" Prices Always So High?

I was considering going to the "Springtime in the Smokies" car show in Townsend,Tennessee,
but after finding out that the "Special" rate for the cheapest room is $122/Night,I've decided not to
go.This is on May 9th.
Why do they think everyone has a lot of money?Plus you're normally not able to enjoy the room
most of your stay,while attending the car shows.
 
I still sleep on the ground on many of my trips. A sleeping bag doesn’t take up much room.
 
Doug - where'd you find the $122? The event page says a block of room is reserved at the Tremont, but I can't even find any room rates listed on the Tremont site.

Townsend is a popular place, even though (and maybe because) it's a small town in the Smokies, so motel rates are going to be higher than less popular spots. While I won't go so far to say that $122 is dirt cheap, it is in line with other places (and cheaper than most) for those dates. I just did a search on Expedia, which typically quotes discounted rates; here's what I found for that weekend (and they show Tremont at $189/night):

 
During car week here in Monterey, hotels gouge folks for every dime. The rates are double or triple and they require a three night minimum stay. You can avoid the hotels and rent a small vacation house for $10,000 a week.
