Car Show Politics?

Sharon!, May I have a word with you at the next PV meet!--Keoke-- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif Bruce you took the words right out of me mouth.-Keoke

Politics has influenced judged events as long as there have been judged events. Cars, horses, dogs, olympic skating, you name it. I've seen a particular car club pack the box for one of their members, giving better examples no chance. It's discouraging. But it's life. I like the personal satisfaction of doing a good job. I'll probably neve drive my BJ8 as many hours as I've spent on the restoration, so that's were the fun is.

gents, i was invited to bring my car to a small local gathering on fathers day when i got there they gave me some paperwork to complette i noticed a card in the package with a red number on it, i asked what this card was for "oh put that on your windscreen so the car can be itentified for the judging" i simply dropped it a nearby trash can. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

see, that's the difference when you've got a young son as opposed to what you do for yourself. I love the car shows, but would never spend the time to stick around for the judging and awards if it was just me. But my son lives for the trophy, and I do it for him.

shg, i agree, remember it was fathers day and my son "paul" was with me, the real difference is that hes 24 years old and has for a while now been collecting his own trophys if ya know what i mean! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

What I topic! I can't resist adding to it...

"Popular" car shows have mystified me for many years. Truly, the results seem almost random in some cases. And while it may be common wisdom that "red cars always win," I have found that that is not quite true; they may more generally finish well, but what really seems to be a consistent winner is "differentness."

A case in point: two weeks ago at the Portland All British Field Meet -- reputedly the largest event of its kind west of the Mississippi River, with over 800 cars this year -- it was a tan and OEW BJ7 that won its class. It was far from any original color combination, but the car was immaculate and the differentness of it made it stand out.

"Nicest" does not, by any means, always win. "Most original" doesn't either. Nor does "most/best patina." The public is fickle, something people gang up to vote for so-and-so's car, sometimes having the spot on the end of a row helps, sometimes showmanship (signage, stuffed animals, Union Jacks, etc.) helps, and sometimes you wonder if they counted the votes correctly because there is no apparent rhyme or reason to it at all.

I like to think that the result of such a vote is the marketplace talking to us, but sometimes it is very hard to discern just what it is saying.

I am a bit confused, however, about your mention of judges/judging at the Palo Alto meet -- you mean that there were judges doing the selection, and not a "popular vote" where all entrants get ballots?

At Palo Alto, if there were "People's Choice" ballots I didn't see anyone with one. Cars were not numbered. We had fill-in- the-blanks placards for the windshields, many of which went un-filled out. I haven't a clue how the cars were judged. But I know awards were given out.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif Well, having read your posts I just had to give my opinion.

I've gone to about 6 or 7 shows and Agatha has always done well. I've now had enough. The trophies are in my memory trunk and forgotten. The reactions of spectators, however, are still in my mind and Agatha's Journal. When I go to a show I put a sign up that says "Not to be Judged, Thank You" Then I put another that says, "Just enjoy me and if you have a memory about this LBC, talk to me - I want to hear all about it. If you have any questions, I'm glad to answer them."

I now enjoy the shows and when someone comes up and talks about Agatha, I have him or her sign her Journal.

Owning my LBC is all about driving and socializing.

Opinons, opinions, opinions; where the "differentness" is appalling and leaves one with a solicious feeling about their future.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
