Car shipping

YankeeTR said:
Most carriers will ship a non-running vehicle but there's an extra charge. When I was hauling cars in the late 80's i charged .80 cpm (enclosed) for a non-runner...I checked with DAS last year and and was quoted .85 cpm (open trailer) plus $150.00 surcharge for the non-runing vehicle.

I just bought this running/driving (sort of) Spitfire on eBay.

It's in San Diego. I'm in Pennsylvania, near Allentown. Approx 2400 miles in between.

DAS quoted me approx $1300 for top load, enclosed carrier, $50K insurance (the minimum I could buy). They refused to ship it open carrier, as they claimed the track was too narrow to fit evenly/securely on the rails.

Should be here next week /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif Woo hoo!

Hey guys,

I'm looking at having my car shipped from NM to NY. This thread is a bit old, so I was wondering if anyone has used or could recommend a transport service since then.

Not really looking forward to this as gas prices are so high now. ugh.

Cheers,
Gavin

Just a note, guys: if you're collecting a car from a remote location or shipping it, be sure it's properly insured.

And, if you don't currently have a car insured for "agreed value" or "stated amount", talk to your insurer about purchasing such coverage for the car.

Remember, it's YOUR car the moment that the title is signed over, etc.: you must insure it from that time on. The shipper has some responsibility for "care/custody/control while shipping, but you must insure the car to be absolutely sure it is properly covered.

Don't find out about insurance (or the lack thereof) the hard way!

I have used InterCity Vanlines for all of the cars that I've shipped. My father -- a professional restorer -- also uses them exclusively. To my knowledge, all of their trailers are enclosed. They are very serious, and will care for your baby as if it were their own. To give you an idea of how careful and trustworthy they are, they usually have twenty or more trucks at the Pebble Beach Concours. Indeed, the best in show winning Mormon Meteor Duesenberg was shipped there using InterCity. Moreover, the Nethercut collection uses them. I've never had them tell me that a car was too narrow. They've been moving around my father's latest project -- a 1937 AC Sports Tourer -- and that's got a really narrow track. Shouldn't be a problem. And their prices are pretty reasonable.

Here's a great shot of the staging area the day before Pebble Beach. Some pretty serious iron. I had to laugh when I compared this scene to when InterCity showed up on my block and unloaded my MG!

They're awesome.
