Car shipping

Now I have a TR but there is the small matter of it being 700+ miles from here. I have access to a full size Dodge truck to tow it back but I can't find a car carrier to rent one way. Uhaul wnats me to rent their trailer and their truck to pull it with for $1K....anyone have a suggestion? Should I consider having it shipped?

Hi Brent, I certainly would investigate the shipping costs for that relative short distance.IMOP you can save a few bucks and do not have any personal liability.--Fwiw---Keoke

i just shipped my mercedes for $595 across the country. are there any local tool rental/tent rental places you could check? UHaul is an absolute rip-off....

You could do a dolly system (just take off the driveshaft)...

Rent a U-haul trailer or dolly for a local rental...bring it back to the same dealer.

I trailered mine 1000 miles each way last June. Wouldn't have done it any other way. I rented the trailer from a local trailer sales company who happened to have an ideal rental. The trailer rental fee for a long weekend Thurs night thru Monday morning) was about $160.

It was a long drive, but worth it. I actually did my overnight pit stops in Nashville on each leg /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here's my dolly that I use for my cars...this one followed me for 600 miles...

The problem with the small dolly, is what if you have a flat? The larger trailers are 4 wheel!
Whenever I use a trailer, I rent from Uhaul, a large drive up style, similar to WideSpreadpanic's, but with ratchet tire grabbers. Also for 10 bucks or so both the trailer AND your car on the trailer is insured!!!!! Usually about $150 for a 3 day weekend. Most of us do not have insurance on our new finds when trailering home.

Well if you tow with a dolly you have four wheels on the ground...if you tow with a trailer you STILL have four wheels on the ground.

If you have a flat, you change it! I do a lot of towing with my dolly and I have two sets of tires that I mount whenever I'm towing any long distances.

I have one set with a 5.5" Ford pattern for '48 and earlier Fords and most Ford pick-ups. And I have one set for Ford and MOPAR 4.50" patterns. Now I'll have another pair with TR wheels because I have to pick-up my TR2 in Tennessee.

My regular insurance collision policy covers my truck and light duty trailers. If you have a collector car that has any value you should have it insured BEFORE you move it...I'd really hate to try to convince U-Haul's insurance company that the "OLD" car you are towing is a classic...it may be but they will pay as if it was just an "old car".

I drove 700 miles picked up a uhaul trailer picked up my TR3 and towed it back home, rental cost $249. I also checked into shipping tough if the car does not run...

I wish that I had a nice 3 go go and pick up. You can bet your A** that I would find a way to get it home. Maybe carry it on my wifes back. Ya think?

My TR6 was dollied from Tempe, AZ to Western PA. The added cost was $150.00 for a hitch and $100.00 for the dolly. This was in '94 so I'm sure these prices won't hold true today.
The only problem was that you can't back up with a car and dolly, so you have to be aware when parking.

Now that we are talking shipping. Does anyone know a ballpark cost of shipping a car from the UK to the states. Is there a preferred shipper?

You got a great deal on a one-way rental because U-Haul probably needed equipment in Florida.
Years ago, when I sold racing tires at my local dirt track, I bought about 150 tires in Florida. I rented a trailer one-way back to Wisconsin...it was about $85.00 vs. over $300.00 if I had rented one at home for a round trip.

Most carriers will ship a non-running vehicle but there's an extra charge. When I was hauling cars in the late 80's i charged .80 cpm (enclosed) for a non-runner...I checked with DAS last year and and was quoted .85 cpm (open trailer) plus $150.00 surcharge for the non-runing vehicle.

FYI - I ended up using 4 Corners Transport. Very good customer service and the best price of the 20+ quotes I got. They found a truck out of Chattanooga and the driver was great. He called several times during the transport to update me on location. Picked up Monday in MD and delivered the next evening to Nashville for less than $600.

Sounds like you got lucky...congrats on the new toy. Now we need updates...

When I picked mine up in VA and brought it back to dallas. I took a chance and it worked out pretty well.

I drove out to Virgina, looked on craigslist, found a trailer and bought it for $900

Towed the car back and sold it the next day for $1000. Worked out pretty well.

Tailers are wierd like that, you can flip one in a matter of hours for what you paid for it.

You may just want to ship it. I was qouted around $800. But I wasn't (still not) working at the time and wanted to make the trip.
