Yep - that was during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Closest the world has come to actual use of nuclear weapons in conflict since 1945.

I recall seeing Kennedy's announcement. Followed by conversations on nuclear war and political systems. At about that time I was reading John LeCarre and Ian Fleming.

Wow - I vaguely remember a documentary on that 1983 "event". What an irony, that Petrov, who likely prevented nuclear war by purposefully not following orders, was relieved of duty and pensioned off - for not following orders.
