Car Insurance for your LBC

Re: Long Time Hagerty Insurer

Condon & Skelly wrote mine thru Met Life, pay 170/yr for the 2 SP250's, value one at 3,000 and one at 11,000. (agreed value). Usual club, show, etc restrictions & 2,500 miles. However, since I am always fiddling with something there are a lot of test drives to make sure it is OK for the next show.

Re: Long Time Hagerty Insurer

so they never check on the mileage? Do they ask for say a picture of the O/D every year to confirm your mileage?

Re: Long Time Hagerty Insurer

As with anything else, if you lie to your insurance company, they may not cover you if you have an "incident" and they find out. It's all a matter of how lucky you feel...

I use Hagerty. Very good company. I've had 1 claim for a ding and they took care of it instantly. No premium increase either. Highly recommend them.

My motto with auto and homeowners insurance: shop until you drop! Auto insurance is a highly competitive business and as such, it pays handsomely to shop coverages annually.

I reduce my premiums every year this way. I call at least three, local Independent Agents, plus the "big three" direct writers, Allstate, St. Farm and Nationwide. GEICO is usually competitive, too.

It's well worth the effort for me, I highly recommend it.

I'm using Hagerty as well. Very nice people over there. For $30k of agreed value, only $232/yr. I'm using Progressive for my liability insurance. Their rate is also low.

If you're worried about collision insurance it's also not a bad idea to talk to a few quality shops about which companies are good to work with and insist on everything being done "right" as opposed to trying to get everything cut-rate and cheap.

One of those big three mentioned has a reputation among every shop I've talked to as being top-notch, insists on everything being new and perfect. One shop even said they fought with him about using a new OEM part on something where an aftermarket was more than suitable (that shop is really picky so I'm sure it was a rather trivial part anyway).

Another of those big three has a reputation across the board for trying to get everything rediculously cheap, to the point where they'll be glad to save just a few bucks on a junkyard part that can be made to work rather than get something new to do the job right.

Those reports also seem to vary from region to region with the big companies, so it may be worth asking around.

Scott,

It seems like you know which companies you've heard are good and which companies you've heard are bad. Which is which.
I did a lot of checking out before going with Hagerty. They came out on top of my list.

Insurance is a funny thing. You hate paying for it until you really need it. I hope to never need their services.

I don't know about the classic/collector insurance. I haven't heard anything particularly "bad" about any of the popular ones.

As for the others...Without exception everyone I've ever talked to about insurance raves about State Farm. I have read some bad things on the 'net about them so maybe it's a "your mileage may vary" situation.

I'm getting ready to go through a claim with them, we'll see how it goes.

Scott,

You are so correct. It's definitely a "your mileage may vary" situation. Good luck with your upcoming claim.

I put liability-only on all my MGB's with the same company that insures my house & regular cars (USAA)...inexpensive & great customer support....the more unusual cars (MG TD, Magnette, etc) get full coverage through them.

Jerri's Mercedes was totalled by a guy who had his car insured with Allstate (he had been drinking, backed into her, told USAA on phone - in recorded phone call on my cell phone when I got to scene & called them - that he had backed into her without looking)...after fighting with Allstate for what seemed forever, I called USAA & they took over & everything worked out fine (they told me I wanted them to handle the claim right when the accident happened but I was stubborn)...

Back to the insurance tracking of policies. State Law and the individual contract will decide whether you're Umbrella policy would be utilized.
I strongly suggest an Umbrella policy and a complete understanding of the underlying coverages.

For those that carry their regular auto insurance and an umbrella with the same carrier, but decide to use a antique or classic carrier for their LBC/classic only. If you carry smaller liability limits on your LBC/classic than on your regular autos, but get sued under coverage provided under the umbrella policy, you personally would be responsible for the difference in the underlying limits. In addition for coverage to exist under the umbrella policy, the LBC/classic would also have to be listed on that policy.

I just insure everything with USAA - keeps it simpler that way!

I have Haggerty Insurance also. Very pleased. When I got a ding in the Six they took care of me right away. No questions, nothing. And my premiums didn't go up either.
