Capillary tube temp gauge

Folks,

What is the likely causes for a capillary tube temperature gauge to stop working, and is it repairable?
The is a1.5-inch long section where the outer "coil" is missing, but it use to work even with that is.

They stop working when the ether leaks out, usually because of mishandling the tube, esp. where it connects to the bulb. They are easily repairable by professionals--Nisonger here on the east coast and some places out west. We just discussed this a few days ago so for more info use the search engine to find the string.
 
I just went through this. Unless you are sensitive about replacement parts, i would suggest buying a new gauge rather than rebuilding one.
 
If you do decide on replacement instead of repair... remember you still own a British car. Don't throw the old gauge out... keep it to trade or sell it for parts.

Why? At Moss, new gauges cost $300-500, depending on model. The couple rebuilds I've had done were +/-$200; and the Moss replacements are slightly different than original. There might be some NOS gauges around, but the price would be dear.

If you're driving a BN1 or 2, the Moss replacement safety gauge matches yours - not true in the case of the 6 cyl cars.
