TR4/4A Can't get rear extension off. Help!

Glad to hear! Funny how every so often a tailhousing fights being removed. If you polish the shaft with 400-600 grit paper where the bearing rides, it should never be this hard again! And, of course, do plan to replace that bearing since it was given the impact loading.

Wow - My elation is shortlived. It appears the driving the mainshaft thru the center main bearing is going to be very hard as well. I don't like the looks of hitting the mainshaft very hard on the flat, rear portion of the bellhousing - looks like it could crack easy.

John - If I can get this thing apart and back together I am doing a full rebuild even though the innards look little used. And almost everything else on the car.

IIRC, there is an alternative. After dropping the countershaft, use a long punch to tap the rear bearing back just a little (with the shaft still in it), then use a "splitter" type puller with some threaded rod extensions to grab the snap ring on the bearing and pull the bearing off the shaft.
An occasional brisk rap on the forcing screw should help encourage it.

Just to show the concept

OK Thanks I will try it the way you suggest. I now own two clamshell splitters that came in the kit I bought to get the extension off but I will need to get some threaded rod to reach the end of the mainshaft. Not comfortable with hitting the shaft thru the bearing with enough force to get it out - that is only aluminum holding the bearing.
