Can't get it up

I have been trying to change out the driveshaft and ujoints for my MGB for a bit of time now. Thanks to Tony and NAPA, I now have all the parts. The trouble is that I can't get the car up high enough with my autozone jack and jackstands. I can't get under the car at all, and can barely see the driveshaft. My arms aren't long enough to get to the bolts.

Part of the problem could be that I have a gravel driveway. It's pretty packed down, but there's still some sinking. The garage has a concrete floor, but it's sloped and I'm not sure I can get the car in there, even with someone to help me push it.

I'm not against the idea of buying a better jack and stands that would get the car up higher even though they look expensive. That could be what the Sears card is for though. But I don't want to do that if it's a bad idea. If someone out there has some ideas where I can use what I have, it would be great. But I'm willing to consider any ideas at this point. Any advice would be appreciated. Having the car on the road in time to drive it to work Monday would be a real plus.

Put the jack on a peice of plywood or such to get it high enough for the jackstands.

Do youself a favor and go buy a 3 ton floor jack.
 
Raise it up high enough to get support under it - like boards under the wheels - then lower the jack and put a thick base - like several thicknesses of plywood - under the jack and raise it more. Repeat as necessary. Be sure the supports (jackstands) are secure and redundant!

This is what we ended up doing. My father came over with his scissor jack and a set of homemade wooden ramps that he uses with his Corvette. We jacked the car up and put the ramps under the rear wheels.

This is kind of a tough job. The books don't make it sound too hard, but getting the ujoint crosses out of the yokes is hard, and getting the new crosses in isn't fun. But, all I'll need to do now is bolt the driveshaft in place and all should be well.

I would have had this finished already, but I woke up with a killer migrane this morning. Missed church, lunch with my family, and am just now making tenative steps outside of the bedroom. Nothing like having to waste a good day flat on my back in pain. Not trying to bring about pity, but it is quite frustrating.

It's great that winter is leaving, and spring and summer are well on the way. But I have this problem every time. Maybe I can finish before dark, very carefully.

Got it done and took it for a spin. Don't worry, the head pain was gone. Only the trouble with my right rotator cuff caused any problems with this, and I've got ways of getting around that.

It's like driving a different car. Taking it up to 4000 rpm between shifts is like almost nothing. It's as smooth as butter.
