Just bought me one of these, need it to do some short videos of the daughters performances and song for her port folio, she needs these for when she applies to university, need to start collecting thing now.

I have the earlier xl2, which is still a great camera but is only sd. this is HD and has a lot more settings as it will do what the xl2 did and then some,
I was just wondering if any of you photography types have had any experience with this camera and can give me a few tips on how to get the best from it.
I know it is old school now but still an amazing piece of kit.

I still use glass plates, egg white, ammonia fumes, and silver nitrate, so no help there.

You might want to post in the BCF Photography section:

You aren't using silver plated copper, iodine, bromine, and then mercury vapors?

I use Canon SLRs but have never touched one of those beasties, so regrettably I am of no use.

I've been quite happy with my Canon R5. Though I mostly shoot stills, it will handle up to 8K video at 30FPS and 4K video up to 120FPS (for ultra slow motion). When the R5 first came out, there was an issue with it shutting down due to over heating when shooting 4K or 8K for extended periods, however, that have fixed that issue in recent firmware. (I never shot video long enough to have the issue anyway).

That will certainly get the job done!
any chance you can move it for me please basil, when i posted it i couldn't find the photography forum
... pretty please...

I have now found the manual, still available on Canons web site, so help is at hand,
I have also found an XL spreadsheet with some presets which will come in very handy also.

Well, I certainly could, but to be honest, a lot less people will see/ participate if I move it. The only people who can reply to posts in the Photography "group" are people who have joined that group. You could always post it in that group also but leave it here. I'll move it if you want me to, but understand it will not get the same level of activity, sadly.

"Photography" and "videography" are two different animals.

The spreadsheet will likely turn out to be the more useful.

I'm surprised you chose this particular model because usually people buy a camera that they can take photos and videos with.
Of course, I understand that if you know that you will only shoot video, then such a video camera is better than a camera that is designed for taking photos.
But it seems to me that people buy such cameras for professional, not amateur videography.
Or are you a camera operator?

I have had a canon xl2 for a number of years, and have become familliar with that one so to me it was just a natural step up to go HD,
It does have the facillity to take stills storing them to SD card, or capturing a still photo from recordings dirrect from the tape.
It is primarilly for videoing my daughters performances to make up her portfolio for when she applies to university for musical theatre.
the fact you can stick a profesional recording mike into it with 40 volt phantom power, is a huge bonus, normally i would have to record her singing save that, then video her miming to the soundtrack, this eliminates all that messing around which makes post editing much easier.
Just a hobby really.

Have to say that camera didnt last long, I had an atomos samuri connected to it via sdi cable, went to the local vehicles of interet show.
An anual thing where i live, gets bigger every year, shot some great footage with it,
went home and set it up on the tripod for the drive past down my street,
I did not fully push the hard drive caddy into the Aomos so it recorded to tape,
so the only wat to get the footage off the tape was to connect the camera to the laptop via firewire,
whilst capturing the footage the camera turned off and refused to switch on again.
the was a comman problem with the XL1 and The Xl2 but apparently canon decided not to do things differently with the XLH1
and the main fuse blew on the board.
No repair shop is interested in even looking at it as there are zero parts available.

So moving on, i got me one of these as a replacement. XH G1s. it was cannons replacement for the XLH1.
Uses the same CCD's as the H1, but with different software and a lot more compact and lighter
The colours are even more true to reality than H1 was. I can still use the Aomos Samuri to record direct to hard drive,
no firewire cable is going near this one, all those cable have gone to the Bin.

This retailed for over £7000 when they came out,
Mine i paid £300, for a new old stock, still in the box.
Just hope i dont kill this one, like i did the other

I'm guessing it'd be easier to tune a Weber carb than figure out all those buttons and controls!!! 🤪 😂🤪

your not wrong Silver. there is a 150 page instruction manual with it. but i find for my needs the A setting (auto) does the job, canon have it well sorted. The picture quality is superb.
