candles?

Nothing heavy ... just wondered if anyone else has noticed that in a *lot* of TV news interviews inside people's homes, there's very often a small burning candle in the background.

Is that some new "media hook" or photography technique? Or is it that I'm just an old codger and don't keep up with all the latest trends like burning candles around the house?

T.

Great way to start a fire. Unattended candles have burned down many a happy home. The soot also will dirty up your paint after awhile, too.

Not the greatest way to illuminate. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/troll.gif

Most of the ones I've seen lately are in heavy glass jars and they're very popular as air-fresheners.

nutmeg, might be a "spiritual" thing, or someone had eaten a large "taco bell" dinner or a bowl of doc's famous "bean soup "the night before? - i hadnt noticed this this fenom. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

Just one more goofy trend. The same folk burning those petrol stix will go all "environmental" over ANWR drilling and tobacco burning... bah.
~AromaTherapy~ my skinny white, err... yeah. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

Aha! so it's more a "home decor" trend. I had wondered if it was a new photography technique, maybe for adding light to an otherwise dark (and boring) background.

I link it to my wondering why so many folks interviewed in their homes have shiny marble countertops in the very bare kitchen, and fresh flowers on the table in the living room. Doesn't sound like anyone I know!

Thanks all!

Heck. I have one on top of my hutch. Dual-wick yankee candle red apple wreath scent. Helps mask the stench of musty humid Florida.

I'll keep the "rotting vegitation" odor over petrochem particulate. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

We have candles and battery lanterns in every room of the
house. Our local power company ( we call them "Flicker and
Flash") has frequent power outages.

Out lights flicker, the neighborhood lights up with a huge
flash, we hear a tremendoud BANG .................

and then we light the candles and lanterns.

We've "hurricane lamps" for "hurricane season". Lots of batteries 'n lights too. Propane and charcoal cookers. They're tools for emergencies, not "mood."

....that's what th' lava lamp's for... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

Me too... but sheesh, talk about petrochem particulates. Nice to have though!

Here's another idea for storm-season. Get a few cheap "solar powered" yard lights. The kind you're supposed to stick out in the garden, etc. They run off of AA-size nicads. During the day they'll charge up, at night they put off a bunch of light (you put them on tables upside down, without the glass diffusers). If the nicads are dead they'll run for days on a regular AA.

Better for all concerned. I'll toss the fuel burners for those!

...safer for th' cats, too. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Just don't trip in the dark and impale yourself on the upended lamp spikes. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif

Uh... I'm sure you're joshing Greg, but to clarify - you take the glass diffusers and the rest of the lamp off and toss it. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Picked up some cheap flashlights for each of the cars over Christmas at Home Depot. They have cranks to run on and give a nice bit of emergency light and hold the charge from about 30 seconds of cranking for a good period of time. LL Bean carries their own version for more money, but also in lantern configuration.

I figured...but then they did have to add the line "remove pizza from box before heating" on the frozen pizzas. Some people! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif
