First, Happy Canada Day! (or Dominion Day, as I learned to call it when I was a kid living in Toronto). I know I'm a day late...lots going on the last few days.

While we're at it, I hope you all of you in the US have a Great 4th of July!

We've been to many different fireworks displays (including the harbor display in NYC).
I even remember as a very young kid, walking through Regents Park in London on Guy Fawkes Night
(the noise and smoke probably left me emotionally scarred for life :jester:).

But last night I think we saw the best fireworks display ever.
And it was only 1/4 mile from our place.
A nearby high school (Whippany Park High) has a display every year around July 1 and we usually just watch it from our porch.
But this time we decided to grab some folding chairs and walk down to see it close-up. We ran into some friends there so all of us (6) sat together. We were pretty close to the actual firing area but upwind, so any smoke would blow away from us.

I'm not sure if it was the dark cloudy sky or the fact that we were so close, but it was the best display I've ever seen.

So, note to the rest of you: Go to your little local fireworks display rather than driving forever to see something that may not be as good.

By the way, the display was shot off right under the approach to Morristown Airport (it's only about a mile away and one of the busiest biz-jet ports in the eastern US).
They must have had a TFR: otherwise the fusilade might have shot down a couple of G4s.

In other useful news: One of our friends at the fireworks shared a useful fact that she'd never known. She'd just heard it on the radio.
As it turned, none of us (all 55+) knew this useful fact.
If you ever used Saran Wrap, aluminum foil, wax paper or similar products, you may have had the roll fall out of the box while you are trying to tear off the product. It happens to me all the time.
But if you look at the ends of the boxes on these type of products, they all have a 'tab" that you can press in with your finger to hold the roll in the box.
In all the years I've used aluminum foil, etc., I've never noticed this "press in tab". None of us had.

We went home and pressed in all our tabs.

Luddite. :jester:

One of our "under forty" friends recently 'discovered' this. She'd never seen it either, we laughed about it as it's been a 'feature' we've used for years. Lots of pre-pressed burgers, etc. for onna grill here. it's standard packaging on Reynolds Wrap too, but for whatever reason their Cut-Rite product doesn't have it. I guess it saves a $tep, as wax paper doesn't "crawl" outta th' box. In most cases the packaging is more costly than the product it contains anyway. <shrug>

We just returned from Quebec City after spending a few days & attended part of the celebration yesterday. It's a great place to visit and it was a great day to be there!

I found out about this about 6 months ago. Mentioned it to my 90 year old grandmother, and she had never heard of it either.

Amazing the things you learn...
